MoveOn Plans To Launch ‘Major Effort’ Against Use Of Force In Syria
Source: Talking Points Memo
Liberal advocacy group MoveOn announced Wednesday that 73 percent of its members voted they were opposed to military intervention in Syria.
The group said in an email to supporters that following its members' vote it would launch a "major effort" calling on lawmakers to vote against a proposed resolution authorizing the use of military force in Syria.
"We have seen the rushed march to war before. We cannot allow it again," MoveOn's executive director of civic action, Anna Galland, wrote in the email. "Congress, and the nation, should not be forced into a binary debate over strikes or nothing. In response to the tragic reports of chemical weapons use in Syria, the US needs to lead in the way in engaging with the international community, while rigorously exploring alternatives to military action, including negotiations, economic sanctions, diplomacy, and promotion of humanitarian aid."

(37,152 posts)Still vote Dem since they're the lesser of evils - but that's all they are these days imo.
As I've posted a bunch of times, we have one corporate/mic party with two faces - the better to keep the people divided, and thus powerless. At some point we all have to wake up.

(37,748 posts)A racist who expanded the very liberal Federal Water Pollution Control Act with the Clean Water Act of 1972.
Far too many Democrats in the here and now would run from that type of legislation as though it were bad corporate branding with no cash attached.
If curious, one may read 'President Nixon, Alone in the White House' by Richard Reeves who maintains and lists many acts that today would be seen as progressive legislation.
Although I realize it's rather difficult for us to allow the vast majority of humanity the allowance of both good and bad deeds, and we'd much rather assign one simplistic label to better assuage our own positions, that road is rife with intellectual fraud against both ourselves and others.

(13,057 posts)Moveon.org is one of the premier progressive organizations in this country. They have had Barack Obama's back on a lot of issues. But when 73% of their membership opposes a military strike against Syria then that should tell you something.

(78,249 posts)I'm hoping a lot of the remaining 27% are undecided rather than rah-rah pro-war.

(13,057 posts)That might also be the main reason why some at DU support the attack as well.

(23,065 posts)In my state primary voting is by voter registration, so I will never change as long as I live here. It is much better than the total social insanity of the other party. I could NEVER vote for an R. However, I totally agree that when it comes to war, banking, & big business, the parties are nearly identical.
How I would love to see a real Democrat like Warren run for president.

(3,076 posts)President Obama was elected. Overwhelmingly. Twice. He's the most honest President (with the possible exception of Jimmy Carter) we've had in my lifetime, and he has access to facts we don't. I trust him, and I trust his judgement.

(23,065 posts)The president has proposed this for years and even put it in his budget. If he's an honest man, as you think, he must truly support cutting social security or why would he offer it up? He said his government would be transparent, but has lead a huge increase in surveillance on ordinary Americans who have no contact with terrorists.
I wish I could trust him, but those days are long gone. He's earned every bit of the distrust.
He is not even near the Jimmy Carter league of honesty and goodness, so disappointed to say.
Carter is the only president in recent memory who didn't start a war. Too bad Obama is not in that category.

Not only has BHO earned every bit of distrust, but it is fast becoming disdain. Just imagine if he'd drawn a red line in the sand about the public option in healthcare and then fought for it as hard as he is fighting for this war....
To me he's worse than shrub because of his duplicity: populist speeches, neocon behavior.

(3,076 posts)We really can't. It's 24/7. Unrelenting pressure. Constant decisions. And yet the Negative Nellie brigade continues to second guess, undercut, and tut-tut every decision they don't completely agree with.
President Obama has sacrificed a good portion of his life to serve us. And what does he get in return? Lots of armchair quarterbacking. It's a wonder he can do his job at all when the Democrats who elected him constantly are looking for ways to throw him under the bus. It's sickening.

(6,785 posts)If he didn't want the job, he can resign. If it's too much for him, he can resign. He's our employee, not the other way around. He. Works. For. Us. We can question anything we like.
Yes, people criticize politicians when they don't agree with them. Dear god, the horror.

The President, SOS and the rest of the top decision makers are all- or just about all- on board. Between the lobbyists here and the supporters afar, we are heading into a war whether we like it or not. I'm sad to say.
