Egypt crisis: Bomb 'targets' Minister Mohammed Ibrahim

Source: BBC

A car bomb has targeted the convoy of Egypt's Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim but failed to harm the politician, the security forces say.

At least four people were reported injured in the blast, which media reports call an assassination attempt.

State-run al-Ahram paper said the minister's convoy was targeted as it travelled through Nasr City.

Nasr City is a stronghold of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group, but there is no word on who was involved.

CAIRO (AP) — A car bombing on Thursday targeted the convoy of Egypt's interior minister in Cairo's eastern Nasr City district, security officials said. The minister, Mohammed Ibrahim, survived the attack.

The officials said it was not clear whether the late morning explosion was caused by a suicide car bombing or an explosives-laden car detonated by remote control.

Egyptian state television only reported an explosion near the Nasr City residence of Ibrahim, who is in charge of the country's police force. It wasn't immediately clear if anyone was injured in the blast.

Nasr City is a stronghold of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which ousted President Mohammed Morsi hails. It was also the site of a sit-in protest by his supporters that was stormed by police on Aug. 14, killing hundreds.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Car bombs don't happen in Egypt. It must be from Iraq.

Egypt is a democracy. In Egypt the disenchanted can redress their grievances at the ballot box, they don't have to resort to . . . oh yeah, right.

If you don't, you'll get bombs and terror for years on end. Egypt better get some backbone and crack down hard on these terrorists now.

Of course, if Obama decides to begin the same sort of covert war against Egypt that he's been waging against Syria, all bets are off.

Assad is not much different than Sisi: leading an essentially military-based secular autocracy with neoliberal economics. MB has the same playbook everywhere of trying to provoke violence and "martyrdom," hoping to spark armed struggle.

(AFP) An Al-Qaeda-inspired group based in Egypt's Sinai has said it was behind a bombing that targeted the interior minister in a failed assassination attempt, a statement on militant Islamist forums said.

"God has allowed your brothers in Ansar Beit al-Maqdis to shatter the security organisation of the murderer Mohammed Ibrahim through a martyrdom operation," the group said in the online statement, pledging further attacks.

A car bomb ripped through the interior minister's convoy as he was leaving home for work on Thursday, killing one person.

Ibrahim, who was travelling in an armoured car, was unscathed.
