Report: Senate Democrats Would Block Larry Summers From Fed Chair

By Breaking News USA | 05 September 2013 8:33 pm EST Updated 5 September 2013 8:33 pm EST
Topics: Federal Reserve, Larry Summers, US Senate

Three Senate Democrats are prepared to oppose Larry Summers if he is nominated for chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sens. Jeff Merkley, Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren are prepared to vote “no” on Summers in the Senate Banking Committee if he is nominated by President Obama.

If the Democrats stick to their guns, Summers would need support from Republicans in order to get a full vote in the U.S. Senate.

Summers’ cozy ties to Wall Street have raised concerns among progressives and Democrats, though the Obama administration appears inclined to support his nomination.

and he seems to have squandered any political capital. I mean, he never had any with republicans, but why actively drive away the people that supported you?

It's so obvious we mean nothing, other than a donor base and a vote. Then what? I mean, yes we saw unaccountable bailouts, the abandoning of the public option, a mediocre stimulus - but we also knew that he had to deal with a very uncooperative congress. But this is term two...And what do we get? First it was the NSA, then Syria, now this. I want to say I'd be surprised if they try to shove Summers into this role, without Senate Democratic support, but after the last few months...

...better start getting REALLY concerned about their own political future. Best course is for Dems is to vigorously oppose Obama's embrace of Bushism. Liberals/Progressives simply aren't going to vote for any Dem supporting Syrian War, NSA spying, Summers, Chained CPI, or TPP. Obama is trying to drag the Party so far right, that voting the lesser of two evils will no longer apply....it will be two equal evils.

of referring to the factions as Republicans and Democrats. The Powers To Be (The Carlyle Group) dont make the distinction. Politicians are either on the side of the PTB or not. We know which side Summers is on.

What a great democracy we live in.
