KKK group plans rally at Civil War battlefield
Source: Baltimore Sun
A Baltimore-area branch of the Ku Klux Klan plans to hold a rally at the Antietam Battlefield Saturday to protest the country's immigration policies and call for the impeachment of President Obama.
Richard Preston whose title is Imperial Wizard of the Confederate White Knights is organizing the event.
"I've talked to a lot of people in the state of Maryland .... and those people are sick and tired of the way this government is going," he said. Preston pointed to immigration policies he says are draining the country's economy, and a foreign policy that has left the U.S. military too thinly stretched.
The Battle of Antietam was fought near Sharpsburg in Washington County on Sept. 17, 1862. It was the bloodiest single-day engagement of the Civil War with 23,000 casualties. The battlefield is maintained by the National Parks Service which has made arrangements to accommodate the protesters and people who are expected to show up in opposition to them, according to ranger Tom Jones.

They have a nerve massing anywhere. Oh for the purist, I know they have the right. Wonder how many of these 'good' amurkins will be carrying concealed weapons under those sheets?

(21,098 posts)Brain fart on my part. I was thinking about the Chancellorsville Confederate Flanking maneuver that knocked Hooker on his ass as soon as I saw "Maryland." Antietem was McClellen. Thanks for the correction. I feel like an idiot!

(21,098 posts)I knew it setup the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg. For some reason I had it in MD.
I though maybe I was confusing it with Brandy Station, but that was in VA too. Obviously, I need to reread some books.

(19,459 posts)I noted to sunlei that I had recently finished Slotkin's The Road to Antietam. Just so happens that I followed it with Steven Sears' excellent work on Chancellorsville titled, most appropriately, Chancellorsville. It's an excellent read:

It actually does have a certain relevance to Antietam, although I'm not sure any of the sheet-wearing knuckle-draggers are smart enough to realize it: The Federal "victory" at Antietam gave Lincoln the boost in public opinion he needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation (which freed those people who were currently enslaved in the South) and to continue the war as a war to destroy the institution of slavery, and the southern way of life that slavery supported, rather than as a simple effort to re-unite the country by the reversal of secession.
I just recently finished a book you might find interesting, if you've not already read it:
The Long Road to Antietam: How the Civil War Became a Revolution by Richard Slotkin (2012)

Not trying to be preachy; I just finished the book and thoroughly enjoyed it, so Antietam has been on my mind.

(3,598 posts)Away down South in the land of traitors,
Rattlesnakes and alligators,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Where cotton's king and men are chattels,
Union boys will win the battles,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
CHORUS: Then we'll all go down to Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
I wish I was in Baltimore,
I'd make Secession traitors roar,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
We'll put the traitors all to rout.
I'll bet my boots we'll whip them out,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
CHORUS: Then they'll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Oh, may our Stars and Stripes still wave
Forever o'er the free and brave,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
And let our motto ever be --
"For Union and for Liberty!"
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
CHORUS: Then they'll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
For Lincoln and Liberty.

(176 posts)The line starting "I wish I was in Baltimore" is based on a misunderstanding fueled by the incident that caused Baltimore to be called "The Mob City," when some Union general did not ask any Baltimorean where Union troops should be billeted. He put them in Hampden, the only pro-secesh neighborhood in Baltimore, where the troops were assailed with rocks and bottles by the locals. I come from Baltimore, as my DU name indicates, and I know well that Baltimore provided huge amounts of ammunition, armaments of all sorts, cavalry horses to the Union Army. One of our most conspicuous city sights is the Shot Tower, where cannon-balls were dropped. When Lee and Jackson marched through Maryland, they made sure to avoid Baltimore by forty miles. Atlanta was brought down by Baltimore -made cannon. I'm always sorry to see this slander on Baltimore. Oh, and by the way, "Baltimore area" means Baltimore County, which has nothing to do with Baltimore, an independent city. Baltimore County, the land of white flight, voted for George Wallace in 1964. It went Democratic for the first time since the 60's in 2012, by 1%.
