Latest by Cassandra story 1 hour 37 min ago A new drag event may be coming to Topeka, but it has nothing to do with Heartland Park Topeka. Organizers of Planting Peace the self-styled anti-hate, equal-rights organization that purchased and later painted in rainbow colors the Equality House across the street from Westboro Baptist Church announced Friday its plans for an Oct. 26 drag show and march in the WBC vicinity.
On October 26th, Planting Peace will be hosting the first annual Equality House drag themed walk-a-thon, the announcement said. We are inviting you, your family, and your friends to all come out and parade around the Westboro Baptist Church with us, whether in costume or not, but either way raising money for the Equality House and looking fabulous during the whole event.
Aaron Jackson, a Planting Peace co-founder who helped purchase and then paint the Equality House, said that while the event had a fun theme, its main intent was to raise awareness of gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender concerns.Although we intend for everyone to go all out and have fun with this event, the cause itself is a very serious one, Jackson wrote in an email published by The Huffington Post. Young LGBTQ youth are committing suicide at a staggering rate because they are being made to feel as if they are less than. We intend to change that message.
Jackson, a Destin, Fla., resident who said he will be making his first appearance in drag at the event, said his group hopes to get noted drag performer RuPaul to attend the Topeka event. Since purchasing the Equality House in late 2012, then painting it in the colors of the gay pride flag this past March, Planting Peace has conducted numerous activities designed to contradict the message of the WBC. A same-sex wedding was conducted at the house in June.
