'Personhood' bill dies in Virginia Senate
http://www.nbc12.com/story/17004134/personhood-bill-dies-in-senateRICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - In a surprise vote the Virginia Senate has decided to refer the Personhood bill back to a Senate committee, which effectively kills the bill from consideration this year.
The Senate voted 24-14 against the controversial measure, which was widely criticized by pro-choice groups, thereby saving Gov. Bob McDonnell from having to make a difficult decision on the politically charged matter.
The Personhood bill would have defined life as starting at conception. The decision means the bill cannot be considered again until 2013.
Another controversial bill, requiring ultrasounds prior to abortions, was delayed. It could be voted upon as soon as Friday. That bill has also drawn scorn from women's groups, despite compromise measures proposed by Gov. McDonnell.

(44,546 posts)We still have to nail them on the ultrasound requirement for abortion, though -- the transvaginal part has been removed, but we're not out of the woods yet!

(182,064 posts)Repubs count on abortion to be an issue that, obviously, will never be ended. It keeps their followers fired up, money keeps coming in, and provides them with the false image of being the Party of GOD.

A major victory for pro-choice groups, women's groups, and all people in the Commonwealth.
Great news!

(96 posts)so some believe that life starts at conception, some believe that life starts with the first breath. Therefore, if you make abortion illegal and I believe that life starts with the first breath then you are denying me my freedom of religion rights. I would love to find some lawyer that would be willing to take on the issue of having an abortion as a freedom of religion issue.

These idiots don't know the can of worms they are trying to open.

(8,343 posts)pregnant women should FLOCK to insurance offices and demand a life insurance policy for their "person." Then, when they're denied, they should complain to the state insurance commission and the Attorney General. Why, in my state, it's Ken Cuccinelli - he'd eat his underwear trying to figure out how to side with insurance companies, since he's anti-choice himself.
If I had done that with the two pregnancies/three persons I miscarried, I could have paid for the education of my three REAL persons with the insurance money. Unfortunately, I'm past the point of being able to participate in the mad rush to insure the unborn.

(14,060 posts)Mainly because I can see the numbnut legislators in my state (Indiana) trying to pull this same kind of sick shit at some point during one of their legislative sessions.
I am especially sickened at the thought of the transvaginal ultrasounds before a woman can exercise her right to an abortion. I have undergone that heinous procedure twice in my life, and "medical rape" is a polite term for what it is, even when there is a legitimate reason for doing it. This is nothing more than punitive and sadistic retribution made legal. Depending on the circumstance, I don't think "torture" is too strong a word for this.
Last night while driving home, I was listening to NPR, who interviewed some right-to-lifer (a woman) who said that if a woman saw the fetus during this procedure she might change her mindand heart about having an abortion. I nearly went off the road. Oh really? Tell me -- how open to **anything** would THIS right-to-lifer be if she has a dildo shoved up her vagina to her cervix, which the technician would then guide like a plumber's snake as it it bumps up against every vital part of the female anatomy? (Oh, and the woman will also have to insert and then hold the dildo herself until it's correctly in position, which makes it kind of like SELF-rape.)
Those who think this procedure will be an effective strategy in the abortion debate have no idea what the hell they're talking about, and a part of me has to wonder if they don't want to again drive abortions underground, where women will die.
Pro-lifers make me sick. They seem to think that women undergo abortions on a whim and a lark, with no thought behind it, only selfishness, so they must be punished. I only hope that pushing this kind of legislation backfires in their faces big time, and discredits and cripples their movement for decades to come.

(2,131 posts)They only care about the so-called baby; they completely ignore the fact that there's a woman involved, too.
I'm tired of being treated like my humanity ends right after an egg gets fertilized. My life no longer matters to these people. One told me that if a pregnancy is going to kill the mother, then so be it. No abortions ever, no matter what. Excuse me? You're willing to sentence a woman to death for your screwed-up moral values???
Those people make me so incredibly angry.

(5,610 posts)Lets be real. This country is run by the elite. They make their own rules. They do not care about any of this christian taliban crap. Well, they care about it in so far as it diverts the attention away from them (THE REAL PROBLEM).
Please anyone, if you are an ex-pat in a place where it is stable and cheap, le me know. I want out. Our citizenry is too ignorant, greedy, lazy or a combination of all to bring real change to America. Look at Iran. A technologically advanced country, run by a theocratic, insane dictatorship. The majority of citizens want change, but until THEY do it, it will never happen.
Does that sound familiar?
I do not have many years left. I would like to enjoy those in relative sanity and freedom. I want out.
