Missouri Republicans Fail To Override Tax-Cut Veto

Source: NY Times

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri’s Republican-dominated State Legislature failed Wednesday to override the Democratic governor’s veto of a sweeping tax-cut bill, a showdown that had inflamed partisan passion and mobilized supporters and opponents in all corners of the state.

After a summer of escalating confrontation and more than an hour and a half of debate on the House floor, 94 members, all of them Republican, voted in favor of overriding the veto and 67 against it, including 15 Republicans, falling well short of the 109 votes needed.

The bill would have slashed taxes for businesses and lowered the state’s income tax rate for the first time in more than 90 years. “It’s a defining moment,” Gov. Jay Nixon said at a news conference in his office after his veto was upheld. “Today was about protecting our economy, our communities and, especially, our school from this costly and misguided bill.”

It was, on the surface, an unlikely victory for the governor. He prevailed against a Legislature with Republican supermajorities in both chambers on one of the party’s core issue.

The bulk of the job cuts would have likely come from DSS.

Now Missouri needs to push back against the massive DFS reorganization

1.An unemployment rate that is falling nearly below national average.
2 More people working in state government
3 A tax-hike on the wealthy (about $30 billion) for public schools.
4.A state that knows the importance of signing on to the health care law.

I'd say Governor Brown knows what he's doing. If the other governors that have some smarts see these results, they are probably jealous.
