(38,613 posts)Well, he's probably interested in "immigration reform" because a company can save money by contracting their IT out to other companies that rent-out temps and contractors, many of which are here on a visa of some kind, and are paid less (and with fewer benefits) than if they were hired directly.
Plus, you can send one packing and just call the company and say "send me another one" with ease.
At work, I've heard the words "outsource" and "offshore" so many times in the past few years. In fact, I'm told that our goal is explicitly to outsource/offshore 40% of our operations by the end of next year.
I'm just a lowly entry-level employee. I don't make money for our company, I help it to operate. I'm in operations.
In my department, there are over a dozen actual employees, and one contractor who has been with us for four years. We have tried and tried to get management to hire him, but they do everything they can to keep him as a contractor, and thus not have to pay a little more to give him the position he has earned several times over.
From what I've heard, this practice is common.
I would imagine the CEO of a "tech" company like Facebook would only meet with congressional representatives to talk "immigration reform" in order to arrange lower wages.
If he's meeting with them to discuss taxes, well, that's obvious.
"Discussing the economy" is just a buzz-word for the intangible "markets" we cannot access, but for which we bear the burden.
The idea that he's meeting with them to discuss "internet privacy" is such an obvious joke that even the worst comedian wouldn't dare use it.
