UN: Syria Sends Letter That Is 1st Step In Joining Chemical Weapons Treaty

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The United Nations said Thursday it has received a letter from Syria stating its intention to join the chemical weapons treaty which bans the production, stockpiling and use of the deadly weapons.

The letter of "accession" is being translated, U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq said.

"This starts the process under way" to become a party to the treaty, he said.

The letter arrived at U.N. headquarters two days after Syria announced that it was prepared to sign the international treaty it long has rejected.

be the world's largest stockpile behind the major member states. This is real progress.

Russia recieved millions of American tax dollars and is still working with the USA to get rid of the rest of their nuclear, chemical, biological and radiological weaponry under the CWC. They have eliminated 90% so far, other nations are now 100% free.

The USA had the largest and more than the old USSR and is destroying its arsenal. Partnerships are being made through these effort that should lead to more peaceful outcomes. I hope that when this task is done, the dismantling of power generation facilities that create pollution and are dangerous in the long run will be next. After that all other industries of that kind.

The world can move ahead to a cleaner and safer environment, but it's a complicated process to work through. The world's people are facing challenges that are different than ever before and we need to spend our energy on those and not these old ways of doing anything.
