Unfazed by Colorado recalls, California lawmakers press on with gun-control bills

Source: San Jose Mercury News

A day after furious Coloradans recalled two state senators who voted for new gun laws, California lawmakers pressed ahead with their own agenda Wednesday aimed at giving the Golden State the strictest gun control in the country.

Colorado's recall elections and California's rush to pass gun bills in the final week of its legislative session quickly reignited the national debate over balancing public safety with constitutional rights.

The Colorado votes sent a Rocky Mountain chill down the spines of lawmakers in other battleground states, but those in bright blue California seemed unfazed.

"I don't see anybody switching teams here," said Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, chairman of the Assembly Public Safety Committee.

People in Colorado did not show up, at least, not the ones who do support gun control.

"Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011," according to a report by the federal , "and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.

That's a massive decline, no matter how you look at it.

More guns have been bought. but that doesn't necessarily mean more peopel are now gun owners.

and in fact there's evidence that high gun ownership can increase crime

http://articles.courant.com/2013-09-12/news/hc-bu-gun-homicide-study-0913-20130912_1_gun-ownership-gun-ownership-rates-study

there are lots of variable that account for crime.

Guns are just one (and they chiefly seem to serve to make it more lethal then spur the crime itself)

or anywhere in the NE. The gunners are in the MINORITY in these places. Just think now many in these states are NOT "exercising their 2nd Amendment" rights by their own free will? Oh, NO!!!!

Six wonderful years in the Gunshine State; land of SYG. California (thankfully) other than weather, has more in common with NY than the Paradise (for gun nuts) State.

in a state like California if they had a choice?

Why would a person who intensely dislikes firearms or "shall issue" concealed carry live in a state like Florida if they had a choice?

I'm beginning to believe that over the years a fair number of gun owners have left gun unfriendly states and moved to gun friendly states. This factor may make passing strong gun control laws in a gun friendly state very difficult but fairly easy in a gun unfriendly state.

that most other states do not. Target shooting, collecting and hunting may not be banned but California law makes the enjoyment of such activities much more complicated and expensive.

he's a gun hobbyist, lives in orange county and seems to be able to do his hobby just fine.

Plus I never bought into the idea that inconveniencing hobbyists is a good argument against gun control.
