John McCain to write for Pravda in response to Putin's Times op-ed
Source: The Guardian
Senator John McCain will submit an opinion piece to the Russian newspaper Pravda, in response to an op-ed on Syria in the New York Times by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, that infuriated many members of Congress.
"Senator McCain is glad to take them up on the offer and will submit a piece," said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the Republican senator from Arizona, who is one of the leading congressional voices on international affairs.
The announcement came on Friday, a day after the New York Times published a Putin commentary in which the Russian leader painted himself as a peacemaker and lectured Washington for what he called a tendency to use "brute force" in international politics. Many US lawmakers made clear that they did not welcome the Russian leader's input into their debate over approving missile strikes in response to the apparent use of chemical weapons by Putin's ally, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
...
McCain's decision to write a column for Pravda came about after the US publication Foreign Policy sent the Russian outlet a transcript of a CNN interview in which McCain discussed Russian restrictions on press freedom and joked that he would like to write for Pravda.

(135,425 posts)I really don't think it's appropriate for the LOSER in the Presidential sweepstakes to be regarded as someone with "equal billing" ... and the NYT can be a total tool of a paper at times, but in no way, shape or form are they the PRAVDA of America.

(6,661 posts)McCain has nothing to lose. He's not running again and he seems to relish bucking his own party as well as ours. Everyone else has their reelection, reputation, and/or legacy to protect.

(75,480 posts)It's Obama who will address this down the line after avenues of diplomacy have been explored. McCain is an arrogant asshole to pretend to speak like a President for the nation.

(1,305 posts)should tell you something. It is a meaningless, empty gesture.
It serves no purpose (except to inflate his ego) and it can
only make things worse, not better. The reality is that WE have
nothing to GAIN by this grandstanding more than we have nothing
to lose.
McCain is an asshole who has a knack for getting in the way.
He is acting as though HE is the President and the year is 1964.
He needs to sit down and shut up already.
One more thought:
Does he have any clue that Pravda could be setting him up to be
slammed ???? (i.e. Foot, meet trap!)

(4,856 posts)RIA-Novosti, Russia Today and Moscow/St. Petersburg Times are the big ones. Pravda is considered too pro gov't so not many people take it seriously. Plus they do alien abductions stories and such. Who knows McCain may fit in.
