Records in death of Ark. man, 107, to be sealed

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) A judge issued an order Friday barring law enforcement officers from releasing any more information about the case of a 107-year-old Arkansas man who died in a police standoff last weekend.
Records relating to an investigation into the Sept. 7 death of Monroe Isadore in Pine Bluff also will be sealed, Judge Berlin Jones said. He also appointed special prosecutor Jason Barrett and special deputy prosecutor Jack McQuary to investigate police's use of force.
Authorities have said Isadore shot at police, who returned fire and killed him. Police said they tried using a camera, negotiating tactics and gas before shooting Isadore.
But his death has prompted questions from residents and some leaders in Pine Bluff, a community of about 50,000 people about 45 miles southeast of Little Rock.
According to a police report, Laurie Barlow told officers she had gone to the house where Isadore was living temporarily to help him move to a new home Saturday. She said Isadore previously had been excited about the move, but that when she arrived, Isadore barricaded himself in a room.

(48,955 posts)The case is going to get intense scrutiny within the judicial system.
It will get even more intense scrutiny by the public after the seal is lifted, as it will be.
The cops are in deep trouble now.

(111,138 posts)We once called the hospital cops on an 88 year old woman who weighed maybe the same sopping wet. They opened the door to her room and said "you gotta be shittin' us" and then she threw a sharps container at them. She'd pulled it out of a concrete wall and there was still concrete clinging to the fittings.
They never questioned a single call we made after that.
I still don't know how she managed to get that thing out of the wall.
If the old coot was armed, I don't fault the cops. The whole thing is just sad. Without that gun, he'd have gone to a hospital, gotten the infection or the electrolytes sorted out, and moved without incident.

(18,312 posts)weighed no more than 90 pounds grab ahold of my forearm with her two hands and it took FIVE NURSES to pry her off of me. **FIVE** very well fed RN's to get her off of me. I had bruises for 3 weeks.
I have seen many elderly people in a hospital setting become very violent towards staff or other patients. They may be 100 lbs soaking wet in a bed, but when they are confused, or aggitated, or a combination of the two they can be much stronger than you'd think they'd be.
I've had a burly *MALE* coworker KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT by old men that, on another day these RNs could pick up with one hand. Seen a coworker kicked by an elderly lady. I've been scratched, spit on, grabbed (more times than I can count), hair pulled, HANDFULLS of hair in their hands....nearly strangled by my stethoscope.
And this isn't a psych ward. It's just an emergency room or cardiac floor. Nothing special. But people can really act out, and the idea that an elderly person can be just talked down with a soothing voice (hard to do when they can't hear a brass band at the foot of their bed), or a gentle touch (hard to do when you can't get within 3 feet of them because of the scissors or scalpel in their hand) is a idea held by people who have never worked with people with dementia, strokes, Alzheimer, electrolyte imbalances, psychological imbalance, medication reactions....

(111,138 posts)or an infection. The former was in the case of Miss Sharps Container. She was a little loony when we let her go, but pleasantly so. She probably cleared completely when she got home.
And yeah, that "low, soothing voice" thing always made me laugh out loud at anybody who said it. I could tell they never had contact with anyone over 75.

(31,935 posts)He had no hostages. Just him. No reason they could not have just waited him out. Instead they wanted to get it done in the time of a 60 minute TV cop show so they shot him.

(111,138 posts)flash-bang grenades in this case, too, but either they didn't have them or they just reacted to being shot at without thinking.
Again, if he hadn't had that damned gun, he'd probably be alive and well and living in his new home today.

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) A 107-year-old man was killed after SWAT officers shot back at him during a standoff at a home, police in the southeastern Arkansas city of Pine Bluff said Sunday.
Police were called to the home Saturday afternoon about a disturbance and say officers arrived to find Monroe Isadore had threatened two people by pointing a weapon at them.
Officers had the pair leave the home for their own safety and approached a bedroom looking for Isadore. When the officers announced who they were, Isadore shot through the door at them but missed hitting them, said Pine Bluff Lt. David Price in a news release.
The officers retreated to a safer area, and supervisors and additional help were called, Price said. Supervisors started negotiating with Isadore and continued after SWAT officers arrived at the home about 45 miles southeast of Little Rock.
The SWAT team inserted a camera into the room and confirmed Isadore was armed with a handgun, Price said.

When it was clear the negotiations weren't working, SWAT officers released gas into the room from outside a bedroom window, Price said.
SWAT officers entered the home, made their way to the bedroom and threw a "distraction device" into the room, Price said.
He said Isadore began to fire at the officers and they fired back, killing him.
Price did not immediately return phone calls Sunday for further comment. He said in the release that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Pine Bluff has about 49,000 residents.

(10,056 posts)Old coot? Really?
The vast majority of the elderly are not remotely dangerous.
Your insinuation that an exceptional case justifies the death of an elderly person is sickening.

(271 posts)they sent in gas and then a flash bang on entry. He fired at them going in. Whether he "deserved" to die or not police will ABSOLUTELY shoot back at you if you shoot at them. Just something to keep in mind.
