NAACP, MALC sue to block voter ID
Tuesday, September 17, 2013
The NAACP and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus have sued to challenge Texas voter ID law, joining Rep. Marc Veasey and the Justice Department in filing a federal lawsuit to try and keep the state from enforcing the measure.
The suit, filed Tuesday in federal court, alleges that the Texas law violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and also runs afoul of the under the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
According to the suit, Texas voter ID law will disproportionately prevent Latino and African-American citizens in Texas from voting in person and, in the totality of the circumstances, deny Latino and African American citizens an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and were enacted for that purpose.
A federal judge has set Oct. 25 as the date for an initial conference hearing for the cases opposing Texas voter ID law.

(22,271 posts)There are so many critical issues we have to face but the decimation of much of the VRA is very high on the priority list. I hope the same groups file suit in every state in which they're trying to return to Jim Crow laws.

It's high time that Democrats are becoming more active it doing something to stop
all this dishonesty. We have waited too long. And once we have started, let's not
stop again. The GOP sure will continue their dirty, slimy ways.
