New census figures show that the number of Ohioans who fall below the poverty line is around 1.8 million.
The Census Bureau reports that Ohio's poverty rate stayed steady at 16.3 percent in 2012. It was just a slight change from the 16.4 percent rate in 2011.
Only six other states had more people in poverty.
Around the state, 36 percent of the people living in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County had income below the poverty level. Franklin County in central Ohio was at 22 percent while Hamilton County and Cincinnati were just under 20 percent.
Montgomery County was at 37 and Lucas County came in at 30 percent.
Ohio's median household income in 2012 was just under $47,000, an 11 percent drop over the past dozen years.

Because you forget something its not just congress we need its also the state level offices because thats how the republicans managed this, they focused for decades at the state level and now they can and are gerrymandering districts specifically to water down the chances of democrats to get elected and we really need to work on countering that as well before its to late.

(323 posts)I won't go into my whole depressing story, but it is impossible to recover in this area from the series of bad breaks that my family has had, because there just are not enough jobs that pay well and offer the insurance plan that my daughter desperately needs in this area. My good friend, who was in a similar situation, killed himself June 9th of this year. Hope is a hard thing to come by in this area, especially in my own home, and I see things get worse by the day.

(21,056 posts)and I know what you're saying. Plenty of them are poverty level, also. As am I. Hang in as best as you can. My condolences for the loss of your good friend. I pray for the strength to get through each situation, and am making it. It astounds me that so many people blame both parties, but you can directly show that only one party is trying to help people out of the situation, while another is intent on starving them to death...
