Putin says no discrimination of gays in Russia

VALDAI, Russia (AP) — President Vladimir Putin denied Thursday that gays face discrimination in Russia, saying that a new law that has drawn protests worldwide does not infringe on their rights.

Putin on Thursday maintained that the law bans only "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations among minors." He argued that it is "no infringement on the rights of sexual minorities" and insisted that European laws allowing gay marriage contribute to population declines.

The Russian law has prompted calls for boycotts of the 2014 Winter Olympics hosted by Russia in Sochi.

Putin said while some European nations have allowed gay marriages, "the Europeans are dying out ... and gay marriages don't produce children."

Apparently they think the anti-libel law that they passed, which is quite stringent, would prevent anyone from falsely accusing someone of being gay, so if you're not gay, you're not going to be persecuted. Except if you are gay, you can get persecuted without violating the anti-libel law, except, this is where it falls apart, if you are openly gay about it, thus circumventing people calling you gay and embracing your identity, you wind up getting prosecuted under the anti-gay propaganda law!

In other words you can be called gay day and night, but you can't say "yeah, sure, that's who I am!" It is truly insane.

I actually see the very faintest bit of hope in his statement, as he is concerned enough to attempt to state something other than "homosexually is intrinsically evil," or something preposterous such as that it is against the Russian national character.

What is required is for SOME political force in Russia, probably a minority within an existing party or parties, to take an at least moderately reformist attitude toward the issue. Right now, only one legislator did not support the anti-homosexuality law that was passed. I believe that continued attention to the issue will result in a breakthrough ultimately. Putin and Russian politicians cannot claim that gay and lesbian people are some Western phenomenon - China currently has better conditions for gay people than does Russia.

The IOC sent Mr Brundage to investigate, he concluded that the charges of discrimination were a conspiracy to harm Hitler, hatched by the press and the Jews. Yes indeed. The US team took Jewish members to Berlin but did not allow any of them to compete.
