Transgender Teen Selected Homecoming Queen (Huntington Beach, CA)

Marina High School transgender senior Cassidy Lynn Campbell was selected as homecoming queen in voting announced at halftime of tonight's football game at Westminster High School.

Balloting began with write-in votes a couple of weeks ago which determined the 10 candidates for a second round of voting. In the second round, students filled out their preferences confidentially on a scan-tron sheet, which was tabulated by a machine.

She told The Times she was "doing this for the kids who can't be themselves."

"With all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me," Cassidy told The Times.

That was back in 2004 at my alma mater. He considered himself a gay transvestite, not a transexual, but he still received hate mail, up to and including death threats.

People suck sometimes. Hopefully our society has advanced since then, and this young student doesn't have to face such venom.
