House Republicans vote to extend 'Monsanto Protection Act' in spending bill that would gut Obamacare

Source: New York Daily News

A three month extension of the controversial Farmer Assurance Provision that critics say circumvents court authority to stop the planting and cultivation of GMO crops was passed in the US House of Representatives on Friday.

House Republicans hate "Obamacare," but seem just fine with the "Monsanto Protection Act."

Tucked into the GOP’s latest bid to gut the Affordable Care Act, the House passed a three-month extension on Friday of the Farmer Assurance Provision rider that circumvents judicial authority regarding the sale and planting of genetically modified crops.

Dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act” by foes of the provision that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in March, the legislation states that the United States Department of Agriculture will have final say over whether GMO crops can be planted and sold, rather than the courts, and shields companies like Monsanto and Dow Chemical from certain lawsuits.

If the right-wing swine wanted to defund Obamacare, why saddle the bill defunding it with a rider that lets Big Bizness off the hook.

They HAD to know that would make passing the House bill even less attractive than it already is.
