UN chief urges leaders to stop fueling Syria war

Source: AP

UNITED NATIONS: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged world leaders on Tuesday to stop fueling the bloodshed in Syria with weapons and get both sides to the negotiating table to end the "biggest challenge to peace and security in the world."

The secretary-general stressed that the international community "can hardly be satisfied with destroying chemical weapons while the wider war is still destroying Syria."

"The vast majority of the killing and atrocities have been carried out with conventional weapons," Ban said. "I appeal to all states to stop fueling the bloodshed and to end the arms flows to all parties."

Ban called on the Syrian government and opposition to "lift all obstacles" to access for humanitarian workers and release "the thousands of men, women and children whose detention has no basis in international law."

Who else? Well, there is that whole "international community," which seems to be diplo-speak for London, Paris, and Washington. Then how about a big shout-out to Saudi Arabia and Qatar? They've spent $4 billion or so ensuring Syrians keep dying. And let's not ignore the supporting roles of Turkey and Jordan.

Funny how the very countries shouting the loudest about how horrible the war is are the ones inflaming it.

On the other side, of course, are Russia and Iran, supporting the Syrian state.

but then "oh by the way" mention that yeah Russia, Iran (don't forget Hezbollah) are "supporting the Syrian state" which must be your doublespeak for helping Assad butcher those opposing him.

And the Syrian government is under attack by foreign foes, most notably the ones screaming the loudest about how horrible the war is. Not to mention the foreign jihadis streaming in there.

As for Assad "butchering" those who oppose him, here's a recent daily death tally from the Syrian Observatory for Human Right, hardly a friend of the regime:

"The dead include: 19 civilians, 22 rebel fighters, 22 regular soldiers, 2 defected soldiers, 11 unidentified rebel fighters, 17 combatants from the NDF and popular defence committees, 1 al-Nusra fighter and 7 non-Syrian fighters (2 Eritrean) from the ISIS and al-Nusra front."

How many of those deaths did your tax dollars help pay for?

protests demanding elections by emptying their machine guns into crowds and castrating school boys.

Of course, that sort of thing offended you when the Muslim Brotherhood was on the receiving end of it.
