Deadly Pakistan quake creates new island
Source: Fox News
A new island appeared off Pakistan after a deadly 7.7-magnitude quake struck Tuesday afternoon in Baluchistan province's Awaran district -- a dirt-poor expanse of land that is roughly the size of Wales.
"The island, which is up to 100 feet high and 200 feet wide, surfaced after the earthquake hit parts of Baluchistan," senior local administration official Tufail Baluch told AFP.
He said a similar island had appeared at the same place in the sea about 60 years ago but disappeared after some time, meaning the current island is unlikely to last long.
That didn't stop locals from hoping boats to explore the island, which is likely mainly mud and sand. Television channels showed images of the rocky terrain rising above the sea level, as well as a crowd of bewildered people gathering on the shore to witness the rare phenomenon.

(27,509 posts)The mystery of Pakistans new quake island

Mohammad Danish, a marine biologist from Pakistans National Institute of Oceanography, said a team of experts had visited the island and found methane gas rising.
Our team found bubbles rising from the surface of the island which caught fire when a match was lit and we forbade our team to start any flame. It is methane gas, Danish said on GEO television news.
The island is about 18 to 21 meters high, up to 91 feet wide and up to 36 meters long, he said. It sits about 200 meters away from the coast.
Gary Gibson, a seismologist with Australias University of Melbourne, said the new island was likely to be a mud volcano, created by methane gas forcing material upwards during the violent shaking of the earthquake.

Pakistan earthquake kills more than 200, creates new island off southwest coast
QUETTA, PAKISTAN Rescuers struggled Wednesday to help thousands of people injured and left homeless after their houses collapsed in a massive earthquake in southwestern Pakistan the day before as the death toll rose overnight to 210.
The earth moved with enough force to create a small island visible off the southern coast after the massive tremor, said Pakistani officials.

The quake was felt as far away as New Delhi, the Indian capital, about 740 miles away, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported there.

A provincial official in Baluchistan, Additional Home Secretary Zahid bin Maqsood, put the death toll at 210 and said 375 people had been injured, while a spokesman for the provincial government, Jan Mohammad Bulaidi, put the death toll at 238 -- conflicting figures likely due to the difficulty in contacting local officials and people in the remote region.
"We need more tents, more medicine and more food," said Bulaidi. He described a horrific scene of people who lost limbs in the quake and who will need to be sent to hospitals in major cities of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, and Karachi along the Arabian Sea.

The island that popped up near Gwadar is the fourth in this region since 1945, and the third during the last 15 years, he said.
