Nuclear talks with Iran advance to Geneva

U.S. and European diplomats said Thursday that they were pleased with a new, more positive approach by Iran in talks aimed at resolving the impasse over its nuclear program. They set a new round of negotiations for next month in Geneva.
After a group meeting and then a one-on-one session between Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Kerry called the talks "constructive" and said he was struck by a "very different tone" from Iran. However, he emphasized that words must be translated into action if Iran wants to prove it is not seeking to develop a nuclear weapon.
"We've agreed to try to continue a process that would try to make concrete and find a way to answer the questions that people have about Iran's nuclear program," Kerry said. "Needless to say, one meeting and a change in tone, that was welcome, does not answer those questions."
"All of us were pleased that the foreign minister came today and that he did put some possibilities on the table,'' Kerry said.

It makes you wonder how things would look if Romney was elected President with his buddy Sheldon Adelson being a virtual Secretary of State. What does $100 million in campaign contributions buy?

(53,661 posts)We've been flipping the bird at Iran since 1979, officially, but actually, much longer. The truth of which was acknowledged in Kerry's speech.
And is part of the reason the fossil fuel oligarchs hate Obama with a passion. Just today, the GOP perennial demand for not allowing the nation to go belly up was Keystone. They have demanded fast track for it since 2009 amd not gotten it, just as they demanded personhood bills since then. Obama has played a long waiting game, so they are wild to get things done in the states to get their way.
Blustering doesn't make peace, although a show of force is part of the truth. As Obama has said, the old way of thinking that 'Might Makes Right' must end, to be replaced by 'Right Makes Might.' That meaning that the first was never just, but the second is and that leads to peace.
Historical truths and our acknowledgments of the pain of past mistakes will help pave this road. There will be rough and scary places. This is unknown territory for people who never knew anything else. They cannot accept that any good can be done.
It can be and will be done without them. Good OP there. Later.

(30,058 posts)Russia as they once felt. Again, it is not in the bet interest of Russia to have Iran with nuclear weapons as it is not in the best interest of Russia to have Syria with chemical weapons. I hope those in charge will sit down together and cooler heads will prevail
