Exxon to offer benefits to same-sex couples in US beginning next year

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) — Exxon says it will begin offering benefits to legally married same-sex couples in the U.S. for the first time as of Jan. 1.

The company says it will recognize “all legal marriages” when it determines eligibility for health care plans for the company’s 77,000 employees and retirees in the U.S.

That means if a gay employee has been married in a state or country where gay marriage is legal, his or her spouse will be eligible for benefits with the company starting next year.

Exxon Mobil Corp., which is facing a same-sex discrimination lawsuit in Illinois, said Friday it was following the lead of the U.S. government. Federal agencies have begun to offer benefits to legally-married same sex couples in recent months.

Now if we can just get Exxon to own up to its MANY environmental crimes and pay out the billions it owes!

ExxonMobil has been sued by the International Labor Rights Fund, on behalf of 11 villagers in Aceh, a province in western Indonesia, where ExxonMobil has a large gas plant. The corporation is accused of being complicit in the human rights abuses committed by the notorious Indonesian army guarding the area.

Oil from Exxon spill in Arkansas flowing into wetlands
Over 20 homes in Mayflower were evacuated shortly after the a leak in Exxon’s Pegasus pipeline on March 29, but the company’s attempt at correcting the disaster has apparently only made things worse. Activists with the group Tar Sands Blockade went to rural Arizona over the weekend to document the oil spill, and discovered that power washers used by Exxon to clean up the town has moved the crude into nearby wetlands.
