Government shutdown: House GOP to delay individual mandate

Last edited Mon Sep 30, 2013, 04:18 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Politico

House Republicans are moving toward putting a bill on the floor that would delay the individual mandate and cancel health-insurance subsidies for members of Congress, the president and administration appointees, according to multiple sources.

That bill would be part of a government funding measure to which the Senate would have to agree, which is highly unlikely. Just this afternoon, the Senate rejected the House’s last move this weekend to delay Obamacare and repeal the medical device tax as part of a government funding bill.

The government shuts down at midnight and this move would all but ensure that occurs.

This is a vote for a shutdown.

Edited to add:

Does Boehner even have the votes for this? This would be a vote to fund the rest of Obamacare. I can't see the Cruzaders supporting that.

with Democratic support but he'd lose control of his caucus and maybe even have to give up the gavel that he uses to prop himself up after a few too many scotch's for lunch.

He won't allow a clean CR to come up until he's forced too. Then he'll start this whole charade over again in a little while with the debt ceiling.

He and his entire caucus are about as useless as an ejection seat in a helicopter.

Healthcare for you, Congress. Republicans, you have to enter the exchanges just like the rest of us who don't already have insurance or don't have an employer (THE AMERICAN PEOPLE) provide it for you!!!

We know they can afford it. If they don't want to participate in the federal exchanges, tough shit! They can buy insurance through the private market, since they think it does a better job anyway.

They need to get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.

There has a been a White House doctor since 1901, I think. Are these people nutz? Sorry, rhetorical question.
The White House doctor has an office in the White House, he is there to see that our President, whoever he is, stays healthy. I'm sure the corporate-controlled M$M will be all over this stupidity.

Note that canceling subsidies for members of Congress makes no sense. Members of Congress make too much money to quality for subsidies. They are required to participate in the exchanges just like everyone else. No more taxpayer-funded health care. And sense most of them make enough money to provide for themselves and their families--like Ted Cruz and his gold plated plan from Goldman Sachs--they can go the private route.

Likewise suspending the individual mandate makes no sense, as many members of Congress already have insurance coverage, so it doesn't affect them or their families.

They know this shit. They're trying to play the American people for stupid.

Try again assholes!!

(It sounds like the Republicans--not the Democrats--are the ones wavering!)

Given the level of exception already existing, there was not much of a mandate anyway. The penalty was too low for rich people and was only hurting those people at the limit. (Though the mandate is a Republican idea, so it is unclear why the GOP wants to ban a Republican idea, but clearly, this is a game for internal consumption. Boehner and Cantor are trying to save their leadership position (if you can call that leadership when you follow rather than lead).

The only problem is to know whether we will be in the same quandary for the debt ceiling. What will they ask?

Then the debt ceiling vote will include dismantling Obamacare.

If the Democrats don't agree to it, the shutdown will last a few days until a clean bill passes. Then a clean debt limit bill will pass, because the Republicans will have just been burned by the shutdown.

couldn't hide their smug grins and smirks as they put forth their new version of the CR. How disgusting. The House Republicans will rue the day they played this game on the American people. Hope they all lose in the next elections and shame will follow them for the rest of their days. There is no honor here.
