Conservative western Mexican state of Jalisco approves gay civil unions
By The Associated Press November 1, 2013 4:01 PM
MEXICO CITY - Lawmakers in Mexico's western state of Jalisco have approved a change in the state's constitution that legalizes same-sex civil unions.
Jalisco is a conservative and staunchly Roman Catholic state that is home to Mexico's second-largest city, Guadalajara.
The law approved Thursday provides gay couples with numerous social benefits similar to those of married couples.
Neighbouring Colima state approved a similar law in July.
Currently, Mexican same-sex marriages are allowed in Mexico City, the southern state of Oaxaca and the state of Quintana Roo, home to the resort city of Cancun. The northern state of Coahuila began allowing same-sex civil unions in 2007.

(11,791 posts)I´ve been to gay pride in Guadalajara. It is a totally raucous, exciting event. I have, however, also been called "diabla" because of my tattoos. It is a really weird place, Jalisco. But I love it.

(2,108 posts)towns like that were very hard 30 years ago...however always very calm regarding gays specially around women, my grandmother used to protect any body who had a gay son...and telling the rest of us to respect them as much as anybody because God said so.....she was ahead of her time.
