Suspected LAX gunman identified as N.J. resident

Source: Associated Press

The suspect in the Los Angeles airport shooting is a 23-year-old man from New Jersey who wrote a rant about killing Transportation Safety Administration workers, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.

A law enforcement official, who was briefed at LAX on the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly, said the gunman was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a hand-written note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs." The official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

A law enforcement official identified him as Paul Ciancia, from Pennsville, a small town in Salem County. A second law enforcement official confirmed the identity, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Pennsville Chief Allen Cummings said Paul Ciancia's father called him early Friday afternoon saying another of his children had received a text message from the suspect "in reference to him taking his own life." Cummings said the elder Ciancia asked him for help in locating Paul, according to Cummings.

One of the fake profiles used a photo of this Oxford University computer science professor to depict the shooter, and Oxford removed the photo after the fake profile came up. The phony photo has been shared 23 times.

account for his behavior. Asking people if they were TSA doesn't sound very rational. Who would say "Yes" under those circumstances? Had a relative who was a wonderful kid, college graduate, smart and became schizophrenic in his early adult years. He never got better.

No real friends, but lots of people thought he was "nice".
And most people in the neighborhood didn't know he was in California, which is unusual in a supposedly close-knit neighborhood as described. His parents were worried he was planning suicide by cop and called the LAPD to find him? Wonder what he was doing in California, and what took him to LAX?

How many more times do tragedies like this have to occur before we take a serious look at how we deal with mental illness in this country? Anyone know what provisions for mental health care is provided for in the ACA? "Traditional" health care usually isn't very good in the regard.
If you are not familiar with NAMI I recommend you check them out.
