A man wielding a knife has hijacked a bus in western Norway and killed three passengers, media reports say.

The suspect, said to be in his 50s and of foreign origin, has been arrested, police told Norway's TV2 news channel.

The victims included the driver of the bus. There were no immediate details of the number of injured.

The man was overpowered by firefighters who rushed to the scene of what was initially reported as a traffic accident, police said.

It reminds me of the decapitation on a Greyhound in Manitoba a few years back. He claimed he didn't remember the killing, had a psychotic break.

Just curious, considering the anti Muslim sentiment rising in many European countries...is ' foreign born' code word for Middle Eastern? (of course, many Muslims are not from the ME)

Tragic case - but the authorities have it under control, and have had it for a time it is reported- I'm not sure who did it - but as the police says - the suspect is of foreign origin - as it is, sometimes when this things happened in Norway - I just hope the families of the killed will be given the help they need - the others who survived this mass killings are given the help they are in need of - and the suspect who did ti - what he deserve according to the law of the land... And possible medical need, for whatever issue he have...

This type of murders is thankfully very seldom in Norway compared to many other nations it is very seldom this things happen -- but it have an impact when it happen...

And the town is Årdal - not Ardal by the way

I must admit i am grateful for your presence here on DU though as when the topic of Norway comes up you are a fair bit better then me at explaining the situation or event in question.

Quite often to such a degree that i don't need to post myself *nods sagely* Also i quite like your sigline, people should indeed fear the fury of us northerners once we actually get mad

Im sorry for the late replay - I have been kind of Bessy as I have been buried my mother up in the northern part of Sweden - she lived there for more than 20 years - before she succumbed to cancer... In some way it was sad, but in some other way it was not surprising, as she had been ill for a while.. Thankfully we had the chance to give her a nice far well - as she wished it - and in all I think it was a decent way to let her rest. After a often difficult life, with a lot of personal problems, she are now able to rest - and to have peace with herself..

I try to explain as best as I am able - when Norway is a subject how things really are - Sometimes it is important to do be there, if something is little off the target somehow - even though I guess I could used a better english than I do... I try at least to keep it current in my own neck of the world - and hopefully if the subject come up, I'm able to at least do something to make it different

Our viking heritage is there to be known - if you really piss off a Norwegian - or an scandinavian for that matter.. For the most part we are a peace-loving part of the world - who want to go to a length - being able to be at peace with most of our nabours -even though we do have our "scandinavian" bitching who goes back centuries - but if one is REALLY make us pissed of - we tend to devolve into what we once was - a rather savage group of people bent on burning down the villages and pillage everything worth plundering But it takes often a lot of time to get to that limit when the barbarian in us is coming back to hunt the rest of the world...

And I found the sig line to be rather a good one - after all - the vikings was feared long after the last longboat was no more - and the last viking was retired or dead - and most of the people who once was part of the viking age was long time dead...

the fact that our viking ancestors are more known for the pillaging and raids then the trading we did(which if i recall my history correctly was actually more feared then our raids at the time :p )

Totally unrelated to this conversation and thread topic though, i must admit to enjoying pondering 'what if' situations, one of my favorite ones is trying to picture how different things would be if the 'kalmar union' had become permanent O.o;;

Finally, my condolences regarding your mother though it is good to hear she got the kind of farewell that she wished.

Indeed - our ancestors was rather well known for the pillaging, plundring and raids - who they often did at least to the 1000 AD or so - then the other parts tended to be more powerfully, and able to fend down enemies on their own territory - so I guess it was less easy to make a go for a raid - christinaity had maybe also a calming effect on the old ancestors too.. For some reason when christianity started getting hold in Norway, most of the country was christian by the end of a few decades.. At least on the topside - it took time before christianity really had calmed down our ancestors..

But our ancestors was indeed expert tradesmen, already before the viking raids from 880s AD, the ancestors of the vikings was rather well known for their trading practices - who often was less about trading - as it was about intimidating the other part - to buy the goods at the price the vikings wanted - if they do not wanted to do it - then the plundering and burning could start ... Even in ancient time - in the late roman period - it is rumored that tradesman's from the far north (It could be the south of Denmark, Sweden or Norway) was traveling all the way to the roman empire to trade - or to plunderer if the chances was there - even as it was more rumors than truth to it - at least some late roman writers was telling about the people who was traveling a long way - to trade with the Empire..

From what I know about history - I doubt the Kalmar Union would have survived until our own time - the difference between Sweden Denmark and Norway was far to great, for the union to really survive - but if it had - the history of the tree kingdoms would have been a whole different one - for a starter we would have had a whole different capital - maybe in the middle of Sweden-Norway - Demmark would maybe have a regional capital of sorts - and I also suspect we would have had a whole different line of kings in the union - mostly because the hand of power, and the crown have changed a few times since the late 1300s in most of the country's - even the current danish royal family - have changed hands a few times - the same have happened in Sweden - in Norway we lost our Independence in the late 1300s - and by the start of 1400s, it was a union between Denmark and Norway, who lasted for 400 year..

But then again - on a personal level the friendship between Norwegians and swedish was rather well known - and it was not that uncommon that people from the different side of the border intermarriages - had children, and whole families was traveling from one side to the other more or less as the border doesn't exist.. And it is still the case many places.. Many Norwegians have also the habit of trading in Sweden, specially now as the currency is in favor of us, it tend to be a few times over the border to buy some food - a lot of candy! and some other things we might have in Norway, but who is more expensive.. And it is something that is really weird in Scandinavia as a whole.. Norwegians trade in Sweden, and Denmark - who trade in Finland and to a degree also in Denmark who for the most is trading in Germany.. And everyone is happy about it for the most part too..

It was a loss to loose our mother - but in a way she had accepted it before she died - and she was at comfort with herself and us - and had also stated how she wanted it to go down in the end - and we accepted it as she had been clear about it, more than a decade in fact.. My mother had in fact also kept many thing from where we was small children - pictures and some things we made in kindergarten - Small things that my mother kept for all this year -not telling anyone about them.. I wonder how many times she looked at them - and wondering.. It was maybe more of a treasure than any of the other in heritage she might have given us - the small trinkets who might not be to important - but who in her mind was more worth than gold.. And I think it might be more worth than gold too.

Norway is a nice place to live - for the most part at least - the winters can be somewhat cold, but it have its sham that too - aft the moment it is -1-2 degrees Celsius outside - and the night is clear, with a lot of stars up there - so I guess it will be cold outside this night...

I hope you are able to visit Norway more then - and for the most part I suspect Britt's to be welcome in Norway

I know you in the US do not have the Å letter - it is a Norwegian/swedish/danish thing - but I just wanted to state the correct name of the City - Årdal..

My mothers passing was at least a easy one - she died in her sleep - without fear and without any of the troubles many experience when they is passing to the other side.. Who I think was the best way to die - just sleeping.. I hope I am so lucky when my time comes - to be able to just sleep into death.. And maybe wake up the next morning a whole different place.

a young woman who lives half the year in Oslo and half here in L.A. She says crime is up in Oslo and she doesn't feel safe going out at night. Apparently, muggings and assaults are on the rise. She feels much safer in L.A. She is Norwegian by birth and hates Norway, but she has to return due to citizenship issues. There is no perfect place I guess.

The crime rates in Oslo is alarming - and somehow the government local as national looks like they do not know how to handle this situation... For the most part Oslo is a safe place to be - but parts of the City have indeed been in decline when it come to be a safe place to be.. For a city like Oslo, who might have 550.000 people, it is alarming that so may muggings and assaults is happening.. But I hope it will go down, when the authorities is starting to make their move.. In Norway we tend to want to discuss a case into oblivion before doing anything - and then we do it properly over many years to solve it..

It is sad that she feel more safe in LA, than in Oslo - as Oslo is a far smaller city than LA is - and properly also more easy to govern than LA is...

Many have reasons for despise Norway - not that I really understand it myself but then I have been living in Norway all my life, so I guess I are not seeing it the same way as others do - who live abroad for long times... But I guess it would not be that bad for her - if she is living in Norway half the year - if she wanted she could emigrate to the US, and be "free"from Norway forever....

from there a bit more these days. another thing is that they seem to just happen for no reason. not the usual motives like robbery gone bad or something. just someone attacking anyone for no reason.

I do not have the answer for it - but it looks like the person who did this, was in some form of serious mental distress - after been given a nj et to the refugee statues he wanted - and was slated for being send to Spain - the first country he encountered when he arrived in Europe - for some reason he was allowed to travel to Årdal on his own - even as some had reported that he was rather on the sad side of things - and worried about the future... I guess, someone did a real F***up somewhere - and believed the person was able to get where it should be, on his own - without anyone being with him the whole way...

And it is not the first time it have happened - in 2003 it happened with the same company - a person killed a bus-driver - and was later put in a mental hospital - for some year - and then he was being put into the society again - a fit person.. But of course - with a lot of medication in his body all the time - so I guess it is just an existence - and not a life..

And we have also another person, who for a couple of years ago, got mental on an tram - and killed one, and harmed many more - he is still in a mental hospital - with a lot of medication - a few years after the fellow was allowed to walk to the store and back - on his own - but that was discontinued as more people stated rather public that it was wrong to let a person who had killed one, and harmed more - should be allowed to let on his own, just a few years after he did the crime - even if he was on a mental institution - possible for the rest of his life - with a lot of drugs in his system..
