Democrat Terry McAuliffe projected to win Va. governor's race

Source: Fox News

Democrat Terry McAuliffe is projected to win the Virginia gubernatorial race, defeating Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli in a surprisingly close victory.

Fox News projected McAuliffe as the winner Tuesday night.

The closely watched raced pitted a Tea Party-backed Republican and an establishment Democrat locked in an expensive, ideological battle whose outcome is expected to set a course for the 2014 and 2016 elections -- in large part forcing the GOP to consider whether a strong conservative candidate is the party’s best pick to win a national election.

About Virginia, the rural counties are called first because they are the least populous. Northern VA (NoVa) is really the D.C. suburbs and heavily Democratic. They are last to vote, last to close the polls, and very, very slow at counting. They'll probably be counting all night. We won't get the final tally probably until the morning sometime. I would be shocked--even though it's an off-year election--to see a final tally soon, and it's shortly after midnight. I could be wrong, but I'd be shocked if I am.

clear that Cuccinelli was hurt by this. The exit polls reported by the WaPo indicated that a lot of voters in their 20s (this demographic group voted heavily for Obama previously) went much more strongly for the libertarian this year than did other demographic groups. So the third party candidate was probably a wash.

on what kind of candidates the GOP should field in 2014 and 2016. Of course Christie easily won reelection tonight. But the Cooch lost narrowly enough that the Teahadists will continue their mindless primary crusade where they nominate unelectable whackos. Someone mentioned that last night. That the establishment republicans were hoping for a moderate wins/extremist loses (Christie/Cooch) to send a message to the teabaggers to take a back seat. That didn't happen so I'm sure we can look forward to more crazy right candidates in 2014. The Democrats need to challenge each and every one of them.

It wasn't that Cuccinelli was that strong. McAuliffe was not a good candidate. Since he pulled off this win, it reveals how much people couldn't stand Cuccinelli. Besides, as long as we trust the Republicans to count our votes, we should be worried. After all, how many times have we accepted the exist polls were wrong? Hell, how many elections have they stole?

Wed Nov 6, 2013, 07:57 AM
Nov 2013

As of 0630 Wednesday morning, Democrats have won the top three elected positions in Virginia.

Governor
McAuliffe: 47.75%
Cuccinelli: 45.27%
Sarvis (Libertarian): 6.52%

Lt Gov
Northam: 55.14%
Jackson: 44.49%

Attorney General
Herring: 49.91%
Obenshain: 49.88%

HOWEVER:

1. Absentee votes are still being counted in some districts, mostly in heavily-Democratic Northern Virginia.

2. There likely will be a recount in the AG race.

3. Republicans still hold the Virginia House of Delegates, 67 to 33.

3. The State Senate is still a 20-20 tie; Ralph Northam (D), as Lt Gov, will vote in case of a tie.

In his concession speech, Ken Cuccinelli ranted about how this election was a referendum on Obamacare. It was not, except in the minds of a few Tealiban. The election was about Cooch, Jackson, and Obenshain . . . three of the most radical rightwing nutjobs ever put together on a single ticket.
