Rob Ford caught in video rant

Source: Toronto Star

Rob Ford, the mayor of Canada’s largest city, has been caught on videotape staggering around an unknown living room ranting gibberish and gesticulating wildly.

“I’m gonna kill that f--king guy. I’m telling you, it’s first-degree murder,” Mayor Rob Ford rages as someone in the room secretly uses a cellular phone to film the chief magistrate’s addled tirade.

Moments after the Star published the video online, Ford emerged from his office and apologized.

“The Toronto Star just released a video that I was very, very inebriated.”

Lots and lots of law-and-order rants about how not maximum-sentencing anyone with any kind of drugs is "hugging a thug."

1. I was playing D&D ... we were in a tavern. I was role-playing the "drunken ogre".

2. It's okay. It turned out the guy wasn't dead at all.

3. I was in a drunken stupor. I may or may not have killed a guy. Let's put this all behind us and get on with me being the Mayor.

Not sure where he's going this time.

I saw on another forum where this video was being discussed someone stated that the term "bird" or "birding" refers to a participant in a boxing match who shrinks from wholeheartedly engaging with his opponent. I am not a follower of the fights myself, and I have never heard this term used in such a context before, so I don't know if this is true or not. But if it were true, it could mean that Ford was was raging at someone he thought was calling him or his brothers cowards.

In 1998 Toronto amalgamated with a number of communities in the region, going from metropolitan Toronto and some of the surrounding regional municipality to the very very large thing it is today. This dropped a lot of additional people and communities into Toronto who don't really have much of a connection with the city proper, and has created a suburbs-versus-downtown conflict which has basically been heating up ever since. It's not really an organic city at this point, but two separate large communities who've never particularly liked each other.

(Toronto in general has some baggage with regards to not-Toronto in Canada, in a way you could very roughly compare to, say, how most of the United States views New York and a couple of the other really major cities. That doesn't help, especially when some of the baggage-bearers found themselves in the city.)

Ford got in by very actively playing up that conflict - lots of rhetoric about The Real People Of This City versus the Degenerate Latte-Sipping Socialist Hordes in the vile warrens of downtown - and basically got in on the general platform of "fuck anyone who isn't in the suburbs or maybe the Financial District." The demographics of the city are such that someone can get in that way, given the population in both areas, and if you look at maps of the mayoral election results it's really, really clear that Ford's support base is basically defined as "not the city proper."

The entire situation is more or less an urban/suburban slapfight, by a guy who's pitching to the anti-city population and playing up his Real Person points by being an unrepentant conservative douchebag. It's all the more depressing because of that.
