McConnell smacks down tea party groups: They mislead for profit
Source: MSNBC
Sen. Mitch McConnell is done playing nice.
McConnell smacked down the tea party in an interview with Wall Street Journal opinion writer Peggy Noonan published Thursday evening.
The Tea Party is made up of people who are angry and upset at government, the Senate minority leader said, but theyve been mislead by their leaders.
Theyve been told the reason we cant get to better outcomes than weve gotten is not because the Democrats control the Senate and the White House but because Republicans have been insufficiently feisty. Well, thats just not true, and I think that the folks that I have difficulty with are the leaders of some of these groups who basically mislead them for profit, he said.

(16,993 posts)Now that the Tea Baggers have turned against you, you want to out them for being the terrorists that they are. Where were you years ago when all these freaks started showing up in the Chambers?
Take your toys and go home, McConnell. You are part of the problem, and in order to "fix" government, we must get rid of people like you. Piss off.

(13,877 posts)more. And since Mitch is looking at a likely Tea Party primary challenger, he's got an up and coming Democrat challenger of stature ... Alison Lundergan Grimes.
I get that this announcement is to position himself for funding, see above. Also, to get votes from the crumbling edges of the less fanatic former Tea Party voters, Independents and in anticipation of a strong Democrat challenger.

Haven't you heard? Turtle makes excellent soup.
By Danny Trace
Danny Trace is Executive Chef at Brennan's (same good folks as New Orleans legend Commander's Palace) and says it's turtle soup season! A few words of encouragement...
Turtle soup has been served here at Brennan's since it opened 43 years ago. It's by far the most popular dish. You always get praise for certain dishes but turtle soup is something very memorable to our guests it's actually what a lot of them come here for. I've seen people just get soup and a baguette, sit at the bar and enjoy. The soup itself has a richness and a flavor that's unlike anything else. It's more of an elegant stew with eggs and spinach and a refined flavor that you won't find in a lot of other soups. We've put it out for parties of 150 or more.
Alligator and turtle kind of have the same texture you have to cook it. We grind it coarsely, then it has to be stewed for a couple of hours. Turtle soup is a process. We've done different things turtle pies, turtle empanadas, turtle chili but nothing's as popular as turtle soup, and that's not going to change.
Chef's note: I imagine it'll be harder to find the further north you get, but we use freshwater farm-raised turtle from Louisiana Foods.
Most guests at Brennan's of Houston claim that this is the best soup they have ever tasted.

Servings: 6
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds fresh turtle meat, coarsely ground
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 tablespoons Creole Seafood Seasoning
1 1/2 tablespoons Creole Meat Seasoning
1 cup finely chopped onion
1 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon crushed dry thyme
2 bay leaves
8 cups veal stock (or substitute canned no-salt beef broth)
3/4 cup tomato puree
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup dry sherry
2 tablespoons Louisiana hot pepper sauce
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
juice of one lemon
5 ounces fresh spinach, stems removed, washed, patted dry, coarsely chopped
2 hard-cooked eggs, finely chopped
dry sherry, for garnish (optional)
Directions:
Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Brown turtle meat along with seafood and meat seasonings; cook about 20 minutes, or until liquid is almost evaporated.
Add onion, bell pepper, celery and garlic while stirring constantly. Add thyme and bay leaves; reduce heat to medium and sauté (stirring frequently) 20 to 25 minutes, or until vegetables are tender and start to caramelize.
Add stock and tomato puree; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 30 minutes, periodically skimming away any fat that rises to the top.
While stock is simmering, make roux. Heat 1/2 cup oil over medium heat in a small saucepan. Add flour, a little at a time, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon being careful not to burn the roux.
After flour is added, cook about 3 minutes, until roux smells nutty, is pale in color and the consistency of wet sand.
Using a whisk, vigorously stir roux into soup, a little at a time to prevent lumping. Simmer uncovered about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking on the bottom.
Add sherry and bring to a boil. Add hot sauce and Worcestershire; reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes or until starchy flavor is gone, skimming any fat or foam that rises to the top.
Add lemon juice; return to a simmer 15 to 20 minutes.
Add spinach and chopped egg; bring to a simmer and adjust seasoning with seafood seasoning or salt. Remove bay leaves before ladling into bowls.
When we serve the soup at the restaurant, we add a teaspoon-splash of sherry on top.

(45,984 posts)However, those above are right to point out that the problem is one largely of the turtle's own making.
This goes back long before McConnell, like Boehner in the House, acquiesced to the rise of Tea Party loonies in the Senate, in spite of the fact that with fewer Tea Party candidates like Sharon Angle in Nevada or Chris O'Donnell in Delaware, McConnell would likely be the Senate Majority Leader by now.
No, this is as much an outcome of McConnell's lifelong opposition to campaign finance reform. McConnell's crusade is not even one where a fair minded person can give the senator credit for good intentions. His vision is simply one where corporate money would corrupt and override the democratic process, with most of the benefits going to the Republican Party. He stood his ground on the Senate floor in order to make the world safe for Citizens United. What we get as a result is the Tea Party, whose rank-and-file members are stupid enough to think they are a grass roots movement but are in fact nothing more than violent shock troops of a top down plan directed by the Koch brothers, who paid for the buses to transport them to town hall meetings and provided them with detailed instructions of how to shut down discussions of health care reform.
Senator McConnell was perfectly alright with the Koch brothers manufacturing an astroturf movement as long as it brought in political celebrities like Sarah Palin, who minted the outrageous lie about "death panels" being part of health care reform, and senators like Ted Cruz who would spout the kind of paranoid right wing nonsense of which the Koch brothers, children of a founding member of the John Birch Society, were raised. In spite of the inviability of many right wing candidates such as those mentioned above, McConnell mistook their failure for the exception rather than the rule and dreamed the Kochs' grand schemes would make him Senate majority leader.
Perhaps McConnell has realized that the Kochs' grand schemes will instead cost him his senate seat next year and push the Republicans into the political wilderness for an entire generation. We evil DUers will bask in Schadenfreude when networks call the Kentucky senate race for Alison Grimes just about one year from today.

(7,402 posts)Kind of like a dog bites man story. Well, last Tuesday the Koch brothers didn't get very much for their money. George Wallace couldn't take over the Democratic Party and remnamts of that faction, back by big money out to make a profit, will not be able to take over the Republican Party either, Citizens United notwithstanding. Frankly, I'm surprised that Rand Paul hasn't talked about "pointy headed liberals" and then we would know that things have gone full circle.
