Husband of former FL Sec. State Katherine Harris commits suicide
Source: WFLA.com
SARASOTA, FL - Sarasota Police are at the waterfront home of former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, where her husband Anders Ebbeson committed suicide.
Police officers responded to a report of a death at the home at 1420 Bay Point Drive around 7:30 Tuesday morning.
Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino told reporters that Harris' husband had taken his own life. Harris, who was at the home Tuesday morning, told police that Ebbeson had been suffering from an illness or medical condition.
Pastor William Hild, of the First Baptist Church of Sarasota, is a spokesperson for the Harris family. Hild told reporters Tuesday morning that Harris wanted the public to know that her husband is "no longer suffering".

(15,480 posts)Harris was thrust into the national spotlight during the 2000 presidential race between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George Bush. Harris was Secretary of State at the time and was a central figure in the recount effort after it was discovered that there were only 537 votes that separated Gore and Bush.

(15,480 posts)Main article: United States presidential election in Florida, 2000
As Secretary of State for the State of Florida (and co-chair of Bush's Florida election efforts), Harris was a central figure in the 2000 US presidential election in Florida. Harris certified that the Republican candidate, then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, had defeated the Democratic candidate, then-Vice President Al Gore, in the popular vote of Florida and thus certified the Republican slate of electors. The margin separating Bush from Gore was 537 votes. Harris ordered a halt after several recounts. Her ruling was upheld in the state circuit court, but was subsequently overturned on appeal by the Florida Supreme Court. That decision was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. In a per curiam decision, by a 7-2 vote, the Court in Bush v. Gore held that the Florida Supreme Court's method for recounting ballots was a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. By a 54 vote, the Court held that no alternative method could be established within the time limits set by the State of Florida. Three of the concurring justices also asserted that the Florida Supreme Court had violated Article II, § 1, cl. 2 of the Constitution, by misinterpreting Florida election law that had been enacted by the Florida Legislature.
The decision allowed Harris's previous certification of Bush as the winner of Florida's electoral votes to stand. Florida's 25 electoral votes gave Bush, the Republican candidate, 271 electoral votes, defeating Gore, who ended up with 266 electoral votes (with one D.C. elector abstaining).
Harris later wrote Center of the Storm, her own memoir of the 2000 election controversy.

(41,956 posts)I don't think you're a bad person, incapable of good or change or love, but the inability to lay down the sword and stop for a moment to respect the astonishing loss and awe of death is, to me, a vital part of being human. I'd wish that ability for everyone, her and you.

(41,956 posts)I think we just see and feel things very differently. In the case of escorting the women I'd be right there beside you, and I might feel as mad about the prayer. But I think those offering to pray do mean what they say and though I won't take it on I can accept that they feel that. And if I refuse to talk to them and throw rocks back nothing ever gets any better.
So I hope you'll accept that I didn't mean to insult you and we can keep talking about our differences.
as actually an escort one must refuse to talk with them. That's one of the conditions. They are there because their church tells them what to believe, and they are totally unable to talk rationally on the subject. If you did the escorting, you would understand that. I accept that you didn't mean to insult me, but you were implying what was a correct/better way to feel on the subject. I can be in awe of death and what it entails (well, just you no longer exist except in people's memories) with out having any sympathy at all for Katherine Harris. Let her apoplogize sincerely for what she did and put the country through, and I might consider it.

(13,616 posts)but so does the outright willingness of some to exploit any disaster for their gain. Yes, there must be forgiveness, and hopefully reconociliation. But there can be no reconciling with someone that is swinging an axe at your neck, and sorry to say, especially in Florida, that is exactly what is happening. This state wanted so much carnage that Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist were considered too far to the left, and many of the Tea Party down here actually thinks Rick Scott is a liberal.
That beings aid, none of this allows us to have a lack of respect for life. I will not extend my hand to the enemy until they drop their weapon, but failign that, I will at least nod my head in condolence.

"All I have to say is all that dirty shit she did in the 2000 Presidential election Is coming home to roost."
So what she did caused her husband to get sick, "coming home to roost", and I have poor analytical skills?
Cant stand the hag, I understand what damage she caused the USA and world but to blame her husbands sickness on that is kind of like tea party logic, no, it's just like tea party logic. Just can't go there.
Although, we could really use a "crazy wing" of the Democratic party like the republicans have, maybe you guys could start it.
