Obama Presents Top Honor to Bill Clinton
Source: New york times
WASHINGTON In a ceremony that mixed history and pageantry with the enduring mysteries of a rivalrous political relationship, President Obama on Wednesday bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor, on former President Bill Clinton and 15 others.
Under the twinkling chandeliers of the East Room, Mr. Obama paid tribute to Mr. Clinton for his work as governor of Arkansas, as the 42nd president, and as the founder of the Clinton Global Initiative, which Mr. Obama said had saved millions of lives.
Lifting up families like his own became the story of Bill Clintons life, the president said, as Mr. Clintons wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, sat in the front row of the audience. He wanted to make sure he made life better and easier for so many people across the country.
The tableau of Democratic presidents past, present and maybe future was vivid even more so because this was the 50th anniversary of the Medal of Freedom, an honor created by perhaps the most beloved Democratic president of all, John F. Kennedy.

Let's see...in my adult lifetime.....I have seen only 3 Democratic Presidents...he is 1...and he had 2 terms. He also IS the founder of the Clinton Global Initiative....which is highly respected world wide.

Why are you so adamant that everyone adore Clinton or be violating DU Terms of Service?

(21,115 posts)It's the disrespect I didn't like...It has nothing to do with adoration...
It has to do with supporting a DEMOCRAT getting a deserved award reserved for very few.

(10,044 posts)The article is a joke because it doesn't capture both the humor and solemnity of the occasion and doesn't discuss the truly deserving of the 15 medals. Clinton was not treated special as the article strongly suggests, all were treated equally, same medal, Clinton's was not bigger or shinier.
And I don't think that President Obama picked any of them. They were chosen by the Kennedy's - It's their award to very special Americans of all occupations (including science, basketball, Hillbilly music, jazz, politics, speakers, veterans, races, sexual preferences, and a bunch of stuff.
Watch it tonight. Bill was not the star.

(21,115 posts)against ANY Democrat. I don't understand how you don't.
it's about the respect....he didn't receive it because he was a former president. His work with the Clinton initiative is the reason.
He should have shown some damn respect for everyone being honored.

Clinton "receives the top award." Nobody received the top award. They all got the same award with the same recognition and appreciation of their varying achievements.
Some of them were Late Basketball Coach Dean's wife, accepting for him, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Lugar, for his relentless struggle to remove all nuclear weapons left over from the cold war, Loretta Lynn, Editor Ben Bradlee from the Washington Post who printed the Vietnam war beginnings, Paster Vivian, Jazz artist (name escapes me), Susan Ride, deceased, award received by lesbian partner, a scientist who figured out how fluorocarbons were messing up the atmosphere, late Sen. Daniel Inouye s wife, Gloria Steinem, Ernie Banks, and a few others, most of whom made my eyes tear up, and I loved watching it, even the Clinton part, but he was not given the top award.
It's on CSpan tonight. Watch it, please, you may agree with my review.

(10,044 posts)I'm still mad because he said on tv and shook his finger at me that he didn't have sexual relations with that woman. Wasn't mentioned in his award speech that he was impeached, either.
If you can't take a silly remark like that about the medal, how about can be said that wasn't silly about their administration. No mention of White Water, Vince Foster, FBI Files found on a hall table, some other babes, Walmart's board of directors, Is it Rupert Murdock her new friend, or the other Fox guy..
Where do you get the nerve about him hurting the forum with that silly remark that we all know that he didn't mean ,and it doesn't come close to the innuendo and truths I just posted hurting this forum's reputation.
Beacool is a good supporter. She's more pleasant and I always hate to hurt her feelings.
This whole thread raised my ire because it said he got a "top award" and that was just not the unadulterated truth and I thought it needed some truthiness.

I though Carter was more deserving of the honor, although he may already have received it in previous years, don't know.
Former President Clinton did not receive a "top" honor as the headline suggests. ALL of the recipients were read their achievements by President Obama, takaing the same of time, it seemed, and he pinned a medal on every one of them. He had the audience stand at the end to applaud the sitting honorees.

(30,247 posts)It must be depressing to be so negative all the time.

(10,044 posts)I've read so much that it's a money maker for them. Of course, everything you read isn't true. Some was written by a former staffer.
BUT, my real complaint is with the article. If you didn't see the affair you couldn't know why I objected to the way it was written.....receives "top" award, my foot, there were 16 of them, I believe and none of them got the top award.
If YOU had been there, you probably would have wished that Clinton had a bigger role and got more attention.
Oh, I think Erin O'Brien said (and I don't think she's a lefty), "Clinton threw Obama under the bus," with that remark about, "If I said you could keep your insurance," and Obama had already responded to that almost a week sooner. I think the President was very tastefully gracious to Clinton.
People who are negative about the Clintons do so for reasons, not just to hurt YOUR feelings. You are a a great supporter for them, always there, and I hope you are not disappointed, even tho I think you will be. You're a good kid, Beacool. But you have to realize that we love our candidates the same way you love yours. And ours don't have all that luggage YET.

CGI Annual Meetings have brought together more than 150 heads of state, 20 Nobel Prize laureates, and hundreds of leading CEOs, heads of foundations and NGOs, major philanthropists, and members of the media. As of 2013, CGI members have made more than 2,300 commitments, which have improved the lives of over 400 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $73.5 billion.[20]
CGI meetings also include CGI University, an annual conference for college students, and CGI America, an annual event focused on finding solutions that promote economic recovery in the United States. In December 2013, CGI will host its first CGI Latin America meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
One of its major donors is Norway's government20 million Norwegian kroner per year as of 2013.

(30,247 posts)Thanks to the Clinton Foundation there are thousands of people who are alive today who wouldn't be otherwise. Do some real research on the foundation from people who don't have an axe to grind.
As for the opinion of O'Brien or any other hack, I don't give a crap what they have to say about anyone.
BTW, I wouldn't expend a considerable amount of time supporting someone who I don't personally know.
"By 2005, Bill Clinton's foundation brokered discounts from generic manufacturers in India that have reduced the cost of combination drug treatments, which can reach thousands of dollars per year in the West, to as low as $120 a year per patient. As prices fell, demand increased, yielding economies of scale that have helped lower prices further, says Michael Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria."

In 2001 Bill Clinton - following the end of his second term as US president - confirmed his commitment to HIV/AIDS drug provision when he established the William J. Clinton Foundation, containing an HIV/AIDS programme. Using the former Presidents contacts and knowledge, the foundation has continually worked to increase access to HIV treatment by negotiating pricing deals with drug manufacturers and working to improve health care services in developing countries. - See more at: http://www.avert.org/antiretroviral-drug-prices.htm#sthash.ITnP4kyy.dpuf

And I saw her IN PERSON...how she treats EVERY Single person in her audience...she speaks to each and everyone of them....thanking them personally for showing up...EVERY SINGLE taping...which are 6 per week. I have been to Harpo Studios...I have seen it with my own eyes.
Oprah has long believed that education is the door to freedom, offering a chance at a brighter future. Through her private charity, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, she has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world. Amongst her various philanthropic contributions, she has donated millions of dollars toward providing a better education for students who have merit but no means. She also created "The Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program," which gives scholarships to students determined to use their education to give back to their communities in the United States and abroad.
In December 2002, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation expanded its global humanitarian efforts with her "Christmas Kindness South Africa 2002" initiative that included visits to orphanages and rural schools in South Africa where 50,000 children received gifts of food, clothing, athletic shoes, school supplies, books and toys. Sixty-three schools received libraries and teacher education.
