GENEVA - Iran and six world powers have reached an agreement on curbing Iran's nuclear program in exchange for limited sanctions relief, several delegations in the talks said early Sunday.
"We have reached an agreement," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced on his Twitter feed.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius also confirmed the deal.
No details of the agreement reached were immediately available.

World powers reach nuclear deal with Iran at Geneva talks
November 23, 2013 9:18PM ET
Negotiators say they have reached a deal on Iran's nuclear program and sanctions
- snip -
The deal struck after negotiations in Geneva that stretched into the early hours of Sunday (late Saturday in the U.S.) has "opened a new path toward a world that is more secure," President Barack Obama said in an address broadcast live on television networks.
"While today's announcement is just a first step, it achieves a great deal," Obama said.
Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif echoed Obama's point that the deal is just the beginning of a political rapprochement.
"We need to start moving in the direction of restoring confidence, a direction in which we have managed to move against in the past," Zarif said.
Obama said the deal includes "substantial limitations which will prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon."

(25,699 posts)They didn't work against Iraq. They didn't work against North Korea. They weren't working against Iran. All sanctions do is harm the rank and file populace of the nation, they do no real harm to the leaders or the military - who are usually the ones making the cause FOR the sanctions. Historically all they accomplish is a hardening of their targets' stance - as they were doing in Iran ever since they were first implemented.
Rouhani wanted to make a grand gesture to show that he is a very different guy from his predecessor. That's the genesis of this. Were it not for that desire, we'd probably still be mired up to the axles in this saber-rattling bullshit. And yes, thankfully obama was in office when he made that gesture; I imagine McCain would have taken it as an opportunity to bomb, or Romney would have... You know, I can't even imagine what that putz would do, and i'm thankful I don't have to!
Diplomacy works. And America needs to discard this multi-administration machismo bullshit belief that being the first to pick up a phone makes us "look weak."

(25,699 posts)if sanctions worked, there wouldn't have been an invasion in 2003, P_W. If sanctions worked, Saddam would have been out of power long before Bush could steal the election. if sanctions worked, Madeline Albright wouldn't have gushed about how "worth it" a million people dying of preventable illness was.
if you're arguing that sanctions can cripple a country and make it a sitting duck for massive carnage, then yeah, I guess they work for that. But when you're also arguing that war doesn't work, you kind of send a confused message.
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)Saddam posed no threat to the region. Sanctions worked. Saddam was an egomaniacal madman. Productive diplomacy with him was impossible.
Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)Saddam posed no threat to the region because of this:
Imagine that, stretching from Kuwait city almost all the way to Baghdad. That was the Iraqi Army, in retreat, being pretty much annihilated by US forces.
Which is ironic when you realize he only posed a threat because we had armed him so thickly in the hopes he would destroy Iran, and then we green-lighted his invasion of Kuwait (It was when he rolled into Saudi Arabia that we suddenly decided he needed to be stopped.)
After annihilating his military, we established a pair of no-fly zones, further hemming his military capability (though we did turn a blind eye to his slaughter of Shia in southern Iraq... after we'd urged them to rise up with promises of US support, which was not delivered. Poppy Bush, what a guy). And then, just to jam ourselves to the hilt in the ass of Iraq without lube, we came up with the biggest, most crushing suite of sanctions imaginable, year after year.
These sanctions were not targeted at Saddam or his military capability - or if they were, they were so broad as to make that sound more like an excuse than anything. It was the people of Iraq who suffered under these sanctions, and they suffered hugely. Since Saddam didn't labor at all under that yoke, why would he care? Of course he wouldn't engage in diplomacy, he had no personal stakes in doing so, and the sanctions weren't about to pressure him into it.
If sanctions were to pressure Saddam into some sort of action we wanted, they were a miserable failure.
If sanctions were intended to strip Iraq's military power, they were both redundant and hugely excessive.
Diplomacy could have worked. You just couldn't manage it with Saddam. But thankfully, the standard means of transferring power in Baath party politics means that you wouldn't need to. Hell, we could have bought out Qusay, I'll bet.
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)Except when you're trying to win arguments with logic.
Facts of history differ quite a bit from your account.
Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)No, I'm showing you Highway 80, the route Saddam's military took on retreat from Kuwait City back to Iraq. US forces really did pretty much annihilate Iraqi military capability during the rout on that route. I'm using the pictures so you have some image of the scale at hand, because just saying "we wrecked Saddam's military" doesn't really knock it home just how wrecked it was. Do also bear in mind the wreckage of the decade-long war with Iran immediately prior to this as well.
So if you're done imagining fallacies to cover your lost point, I think we can wrap this up.
Sanctions don't work as a method of gaining peaceful relations. They didn't work with Iraq. They didn't work with North Korea. they weren't working with Iran. End of story, have a nice day.
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)Vecause of the recent years of sanctions. That point is widely acknowledged by foreign policy experts but list in you.

(1,333 posts)more like bullying wins. I would like to know what terrible thing Iran did to deserve such a harsh treatment. They signed the NPT, they have complied with it while the sanctions have continued to pile on and then they have even gone further than the NPT and the sanction, assassination of scientist, sabotage of nuclear facility continues. And people are cheering this as a win.
This is like me badgering a woman for sex, she tells me no but I continue to badger her, I bound her hands, lock her up in my dungeon and then she finally agrees to have sex with me. But that is still not enough for me to fully release her since I just plan on releasing the handcuffs for now. If I told you that me finally having sex with her shows how good my game is, most her would call me a psycho and you'll be right.
This is something positive but I dunno if i will go as far as calling it a win of any kind.

(10,715 posts)...where they give up their chemical weapons, and Assad gained a big reprieve from what seemed like imminent war. Following that, in the same way, Iran, not wanting war, gives up its nuclear program. There are shades of gray in both cases, and possibility of failure in both cases, but ramping down the war machine is proving to be a reliable pattern.
And both of these were high stakes, highly engineered deals from the desk of the president, who is on the way to becoming, based on the "facts on the ground", one of the great ones.
