WASHINGTON, Ill. (AP) A dog and his owner have been reunited after the animal was found under a pile of rubble more than a week after a tornado ripped through a central Illinois city.
Jacob Montgomery of Washington and his dog Dexter were separated when the Nov. 17 tornado damaged Montgomery's third floor apartment.
Montgomery is a member of the Illinois National Guard.
A guard spokesman says a neighbor sent Montgomery a Facebook message nine days later to tell him Dexter had been found under debris where the apartment used to be.

(115,677 posts)And how many people (even here on the supposedly liberal & progressive, animal-loving DU) would hear about this innocent, loving puppy, who suffered through incredible hardship, loneliness & fear - and almost died - and say "Good! It's too bad it didn't die!" simply because Dexter's a Pit Bull.
Good dog, Dexter.

Playful and clownish, the Bull Terrier is best described as a three year-old child in a dog suit. Given his muscular build, the Bull Terrier can appear unapproachable, but he is an exceedingly friendly dog, with a sweet and fun-loving disposition and popular in the obedience, agility and show rings. The Bull Terrier can be all white (markings on the head are permissible) or colored.
Classified in the Terrier Group: http://www.akc.org/breeds/terrier_group.cfm
A Look Back
Bulldog-terrier crosses, of various sizes and colors, became popular as sporting dogs in the early 1800's. Around 1860, English dog dealer James Hinks developed a more refined version of these crosses, distinguished by its all white coat. These dogs soon established themselves as a new breed - the Bull Terrier. In Hinks' day they were often referred to as White Cavaliers. In the early 1900's Bull Terriers were back crossed with brindle Staffordshires to produce a colored variety.
Right Breed for You?
Bull Terriers become very attached to their owners and families and do not thrive when left alone. The breed loves children, but obedience training is necessary and care must be taken that they dont get over stimulated around younger children. Their short coats are easy to care for, but the breed requires daily exercise.

WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS -- HAVE YOU SEEN DEXTER?
Jacob Montgomery is searching for his MISSING BOY "DEXTER". Jacob lived at the Georgetown Commons (Apartments) in Washington, Illinois when Sunday's tornado ripped through Jacob's 3rd story apartment.
DEXTER'S DESCRIPTION:
1). 6 month old " Red Nose Pit Bull".
2). White Mask, chest and socked paws (all 4).
3). Dexter IS NOT chipped.
4). Ears stand straight up and NOT cropped.
5). Dexter IS NOT neutered.
6). NO WHITE on back of neck.
PLEASE CONTACT Jacob Montgomery @ 217-840-0985 if found.
PLEASE SHARE! (click on pic & copy link, paste to other sites)
And there are no published articles on the web that I could find which describes Dexter as a Bull Terrier. There are hundreds which describe him correctly as a Pit Bull.:
Illinois National Guardsman Jacob Montgomery, in this photo supplied by the National Guard, hugs Dexter, his pit pull puppy that survived more than a week in the rubble of their tornado-ravaged home.

And finally, the anti-dog Pit Bull haters usually can't tell the difference, don't care, & would condemn a Bull Terrier to death just as quickly & thoughtlessly as they would a Pit Bull.
