Al Jazeera America Arrives on Time Warner Cable
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
A little more than a month after Al Jazeera America reached a carriage deal with Time Warner Cable, the news network has officially been made available to customers on Friday.
The cable news network, backed by the royal family of Qatar, launched in the United States on Aug. 20 in roughly 49 million homes. With the addition of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks subscribers, Al Jazeera America says it now reaches 55 million homes. (For comparison, Fox News lists its reach at 90 million homes, MSNBC reaches 95 million and CNN lists over 100 million in the U.S.)

(160,483 posts)Time Warner Cable agrees to carry Al Jazeera America
Roger Yu, USA TODAY 2:15 p.m. EST December 6, 2013
Time Warner Cable said Friday that it has added Al Jazeera America to its channel lineup, broadening distribution for the fledgling news network that has had trouble gaining viewers.
The expansion gives Al Jazeera America, or AJAM as it's often called, access to about 55 million homes, it said.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Al Jazeera Media Network, funded by the government of Qatar, bought the struggling Current TV network earlier this year for about $500 million, gutted its programming and replaced it by launching AJAM in August. AJAM, its executives said, would compete with CNN and Fox News by focusing on "unbiased" news about the U.S.
But the change in ownership prompted cable companies, including Time Warner Cable and AT&T U-Verse, to drop the network, instantly weakening the audience reach that Al Jazeera had banked on at the time of its purchase of Current TV.

(13,776 posts)I watched the transition from Current to Al Jazeera (basically, there wasn't one... Current just ended without even a whimper and Al Jazeera did a "hi, guys!" show and then got down to business)--I was sad for Current but I am absolutely loving being able to watch Al Jazeera. With it and BBC World News, I am all set.

its a shame the women in Qatar aren't too set
or immigrants there.
or people who are sentenced to flogging.
or the inhuman repressive lack of freedoms there.
They're not as set as you.
These are the people that are bringing you AJ America.... and you won't hear about them on AJA.

Al Jazeera is much better than the pablum and drivel served up by most other so called news channels. I watched MSNBC almost exclusively until they fired Alec Baldwin and Martin Bashir. Their slow turn to the right sucks and I am slowly weaning myself away. Al Jazeera and Free Speech TV are my new channels of choice.

(4,919 posts)I have Time Warner, and now I can't see Al Jazeera English (which I really, really liked) on their iPad app or on YouTube whenever I'm using Time-Warner broadband.
Upon edit... Looks like AT&T is blocking it, too.
I really hope they Al Jazeera America is not sanitized for the American market.

(1,528 posts)Now they can give more time to people who propagandize that "jews were told" to stay home from 9-11.
After 9-11, it broadcast videos in which Osama bin Laden and Sulaiman Abu Ghaith praised and justified the attacks and murder of 3000 innocents.( just reporting the news.... think of it like MSNBC giving a fair hearing to the KKK)
That was nothing compared to how Al Jazeera celebrated Samir Kuntar, released in a July 2008 prisoner swap, as a real hero of freedom.( This is the guy who took his rifle and bashed a 4 year old Israeli girls brains literally out of her head...so what)
Good reporting to get all viewpoints there.
I guess they forgot to report how the 22 members of Al Jazeera's Egyptian bureau all resigned in unison on July 8, citing bias coverage of the ongoing Egyptian war in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood. ( what a shock.... the emir likes the muslim brotherhood)
Yes , lets all welcome this State run media owned by the emir of Qatar.
So they take their marching orders from the Foreign Ministry of Qatar, who cares?
I also find it funny how they never report on Amnesty Internationals scathing report on Qatar... A 2010 Amnesty International report documented that women in Qatar undergo second class treatment with discrimination and violence and some people are subjected to the Neanderthal practice of flogging. ( no reason to report that)
The latest State Department human rights report said that Qatar's government "placed restrictions on civil liberties, including freedoms of speech, press (including the Internet), assembly, association, and religion.

( Its easier to talk a good game than to do it)
So yes, AJA should be great. I cant wait.
