Attorney asks Fla. AG to investigate Winston case

Source: AP

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. (AP) — A lawyer for the woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault asked Friday for Florida's attorney general to independently examine the rape investigation, claiming it was riddled with problems.

Attorney Patricia Carroll called on the attorney general to investigate the Tallahassee Police Department's handling of the case, saying that detectives failed to interview key witnesses and that forensic tests were unreliable and incomplete. However, spokeswoman Jenn Meale said the Attorney General's Office hadn't yet received a formal request from Carroll.

Carroll described the problems with the investigation as "so significant and so multiple."

The lead detective got a search warrant for her client's cellphone and social media accounts but failed to do the same for Winston and his two companions immediately after the accusations were made, Carroll said.

In 2003, Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens, the University of Washington, and a fraternity reached a $300,000 settlement with a woman who accused Stevens of rape when she was a University of Washington student in 2000. Prosecutors dropped the case against Stevens despite DNA and eyewitness evidence. I think most realistically Winston, the Tallahassee PD, and Florida State will just settle out of court with his accuser.

and, not to the office of the Attorney General.

Jenn Meale, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Pam Bondi, said any allegations against Meggs would go to the governor's office.

"Attorney General Bondi has spoken with FDLE Commissioner (Gerald) Bailey regarding a possible formal request from the attorney alleging criminal allegations against TPD," Meale said in an email. "No formal request has yet been received."
