- California and the small Sierra communities in Tuolumne County devastated by the Rim Fire earlier this year will now be eligible for federal aid as they attempt to clean up and recover from the disaster, President Obama announced Friday.
Gov. Jerry Brown successfully appealed the Federal Emergency Management Agency's recent conclusion that the Rim Fire wasn't severe enough to qualify as a federal disaster and thus was not eligible for accompanying dollars that come with the designation.
Obama partially reversed the decision Friday and ordered federal aid to Tuolumne County to help restore areas destroyed by California's third-largest wildfire, which began Aug. 17 in the Stanislaus National Forest and burned more than 400 square miles.
Brown had asked that the Rim Fire be declared a major disaster in Tuolumne, Mariposa and San Francisco counties, but only Tuolumne was covered in the decision. The governor said the severity of the Rim Fire made recovery efforts "beyond our capabilities."
