O'Toole announced he was retiring from the stage and screen in 2012
Actor Peter O'Toole, who starred in Sir David Lean's 1962 film classic Lawrence of Arabia, has died aged 81, his agent has said.
The Irish-born star began on the stage in Bristol and London aged 17, but his big break was when Sir David cast him as British adventurer T E Lawrence.
It earned him the first of eight Oscar nominations, with others coming for such films as Becket, The Lion in Winter and Goodbye, Mr Chips.
He received an honorary Oscar in 2003.
He had initially refused to accept the award.

(50,254 posts)He seemed to be quite sick in his later years(looked like he had Parkinson's when he was last on tv, right before his last Oscar nomination)so at least it's good that his suffering is over.

Major Grau: Then let us say what is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small.
Since we must give medals to mass murderers, why not give justice to the small... entrepreneur.
I decided to watch it now in his honor.

Scamp is where he started from. A shame he never got around to writing about helling around London with Burton, Harris and Reed. That was the stuff of legend and it damn near kill him.
He was running with Oliver Reed, Richard Burton and Richard Harris???? Great Suffering Blood-Stained Godz there will be some delightfully lurid tales in there...reminds me of reading "Good Night, Sweet Prince", Gene Fowler's bio of John Barrymore. Very naughty boys all.

I stated that what makes a great actor is when you forget who he or she is and believe the character they play whole heartedly. Peter O'Toole was one of the names that came up. I am truly saddened by his passing.

I'm actually surprised he lived as long as he did. He was a genius, but he was not exactly the healthiest guy.

Saw him a couple of times on stage in London. Always compelling.
He piqued my interest in Ireland. Supposedly he always wore green socks.
My husband is Irish (no green socks though).
He will always be "awrence" (if you've seen the movie you'll pick up on the reference), Henry II, Alan Swan, Eli Cross, Mr. Chips...glad he made it to his 80s & passed in peace.
I'm sad, but rejoycing in his life.

(10,419 posts)O'Toole just transcended his material. Absolute magic. Can you imagine anyone else as Lawrence? (Although O'Toole was a foot taller than the historic Lawrence.)
Loved his Henry II - both times. Loved him in everything. I credit him with making me love Irishmen, so I found Mr. pig (Irish dude).
Still crying. Loved me my O'Toole.

The 74-year-old LAWRENCE OF ARABIA star recalls getting the missive about a battered, well-worn leather jacket - and has always thought it would make the perfect testimonial. He says, "Many years ago I had a beloved leather jacket... and I never wanted to throw it away. "I sent it to the cleaners because it was covered in blood and Guinness and scotch and Corn Flakes, the usual. "It went off to the Sycamore Cleaners and it came back with a thing pinned on it:
'It distresses us to return work which is not perfect' - so I want that on my tombstone."
