Actor Peter O'Toole Dies Aged 81

Peter O'Toole, Lawrence of Arabia star, dies aged 81

O'Toole announced he was retiring from the stage and screen in 2012
Actor Peter O'Toole, who starred in Sir David Lean's 1962 film classic Lawrence of Arabia, has died aged 81, his agent has said.

The Irish-born star began on the stage in Bristol and London aged 17, but his big break was when Sir David cast him as British adventurer T E Lawrence.

It earned him the first of eight Oscar nominations, with others coming for such films as Becket, The Lion in Winter and Goodbye, Mr Chips.

He received an honorary Oscar in 2003.

He had initially refused to accept the award.

He seemed to be quite sick in his later years(looked like he had Parkinson's when he was last on tv, right before his last Oscar nomination)so at least it's good that his suffering is over.

and wondering how he was doing. I knew I would be really really sad when he did die. Now I am. I thought he was older than 81 though, wow.

and the irony of the movie was that he destroyed Warsaw but Major Grau wanted him for brutal sexual murder of one their agents




Inspector Morand: But, murder is the occupation of Generals.

Major Grau: Then let us say what is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small.

Since we must give medals to mass murderers, why not give justice to the small... entrepreneur.

I decided to watch it now in his honor.

The part of him being a 'legendary hell raiser" has me wanting to know more.

They're called Loitering with Intent: The Child and (the second) The Apprentice.

Scamp is where he started from. A shame he never got around to writing about helling around London with Burton, Harris and Reed. That was the stuff of legend and it damn near kill him.

My boyfriend and I were just discussing the other night what makes a great actor. I stated that what makes a great actor is when you forget who he or she is and believe the character they play whole heartedly. Peter O'Toole was one of the names that came up. I am truly saddened by his passing.

I'm actually surprised he lived as long as he did. He was a genius, but he was not exactly the healthiest guy.

all-time favorite actor going back to his Lawrence days.

Saw him a couple of times on stage in London. Always compelling.

He piqued my interest in Ireland. Supposedly he always wore green socks.

My husband is Irish (no green socks though).

He will always be "awrence" (if you've seen the movie you'll pick up on the reference), Henry II, Alan Swan, Eli Cross, Mr. Chips...glad he made it to his 80s & passed in peace.

I'm sad, but rejoycing in his life.

Mr. O'Toole also played Henry II in "Becket," with Richard Burton as the Archbishop/Martyr, in 1964. Another perfect role. May he rest in peace.

O'Toole just transcended his material. Absolute magic. Can you imagine anyone else as Lawrence? (Although O'Toole was a foot taller than the historic Lawrence.)

Loved his Henry II - both times. Loved him in everything. I credit him with making me love Irishmen, so I found Mr. pig (Irish dude).

Still crying. Loved me my O'Toole.

Movie veteran PETER O'TOOLE has decided on the message he'd like hammered on his tombstone - it's inspired by a note from his dry cleaner that once made him chuckle. The 74-year-old LAWRENCE OF ARABIA star recalls getting the missive about a battered, well-worn leather jacket - and has always thought it would make the perfect testimonial. He says, "Many years ago I had a beloved leather jacket... and I never wanted to throw it away. "I sent it to the cleaners because it was covered in blood and Guinness and scotch and Corn Flakes, the usual. "It went off to the Sycamore Cleaners and it came back with a thing pinned on it:

I have always loved his work.

I will greatly miss him.

And as a side note, he and I share the same birthday.
