Bus carrying inmates, guards crashes on I-64

Source: STL Post Dispatch

A bus carrying federal prisoners crashed on Interstate 64 near O'Fallon, Ill., about 5 a.m. this morning, injuring prisoners and guards, according to Illinois State Police.

The bus was traveling westbound on I-64 with four prison guards and nine inmates when the bus driver, Jose D. Fuentes, 29, who is a prison guard, lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the center median striking a concrete bridge support, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr.

All nine prisoners and four guards were transported with injuries by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's and Memorial hospitals in Belleville. Five of the nine inmates were later transferred to a St. Louis area hospital. The four remaining inmates were later transferred to the St. Clair County Jail, he said.

One guard was later taken to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. The other three guards remained at a Belleville hospital.

Among the list of injured Illinois inmates there has to be at least one ex-Governor!

Terrific TV. I remember watching this 45 years ago with my fraternity brothers. Time stopped. Stores closed as everyone was at home glued to their TV.
