Republicans will return to debt limit brinkmanship with a new set of demands to avert default early in 2014, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan signaled on Sunday.

"We as a caucus, along with our Senate counterparts, are going to meet and discuss what it is we want to get out of the debt limit. We don't want nothing out of this debt limit. We're going to decide what it is we can accomplish out of this debt limit fight," Ryan said on "Fox News Sunday," taking a victory lap after his bipartisan budget deal easily passed the House on Thursday.

The Wisconsin Republican's remarks hint that while government shutdowns may be averted for the next two years -- pending Senate passage of the deal he struck with Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) -- the GOP isn't ready to lift the country's borrowing limit without a fight. He indicated that Republicans will come up with their ransom demand when they meet after the holiday recess.

"We're going to meet in our retreats after the holidays and discuss exactly what it is we're going to try and get for this," he said.

By a 332-to-94 vote Thursday night, the House passed a budget deal that – despite taking money from federal workers’ pockets and leaving long-term unemployed in the lurch – was staunchly opposed by major right-wing groups. Among the critics was Tea Party stalwart and Kansas congressman Tim Huelskamp, whom Boehner kicked off the Budget Committee in an alleged purge last year. In an interview before the vote, Huelskamp charged that the deal “doesn’t avoid a government shutdown,” told Salon he hears rumors Boehner’s retiring, and skewered Paul Ryan’s response to right-wing attacks on the deal he brokered. A condensed version of our conversation follows.

Congressman Ryan described this as an agreement that “does not raise taxes, that does reduce the deficit and produces some certainty and prevents a government shutdown.” Why do you disagree with his assessment?

I think I disagree with all of those points …

It doesn’t avoid a government shutdown. We still have to pass an omnibus bill … Knowing and guessing what Harry Reid might do – not knowing but just guessing, I mean – is that he’s going to ask for more. He’s going to ask for unemployment compensation, something along that lines, as part of the omnibus. And he indicated there’s more debates between now and Jan. 15. And so there’ll still be that debate. The only way – again, the only way you avoid a shutdown is you give everything the other side wants. And my guess is Harry Reid will continue to demand more things.

Secondly, it does raise taxes. You can call them fees, you can call them revenue enhancers – whatever. But it’s just more money going into Washington … And the new money’s going to spending and somebody’s got to pay for the $63 billion spending increase.

5. Paul Ryan voted against the bill to avoid default in October, so why are we surprised?

Also, the bill does not avoid a shutdown. We still need an appropriation bill to be passed and signed before January 15.

We can hope the House will succeed keeping these crazy under control, but we all know they often cannot. So, this is premature celebration.

if they do this again I'm going to lose it. We're still trying to recoup from the LAST time this happened -- 6 weeks without a flippin' paycheck for me! (Yes, we were only closed down for 7 days but with my fed job, we're on a time limit to complete our projects. If we can't start on the first of the month, or pretty close to the first, the entire month is scrapped, which is what happened during the shutdown. From the time I got my last paycheck to the time I got another paycheck was over 6 weeks.) Oh yeah, my "back pay?" $12.00. That was it. All these ass clowns are wealthy and they have NO idea how devastating things like this are to a family. It just makes me want to scream.

are becoming a bit tiresome but because they are so predictable and the outcome known I see the following.....

1. We are the laughing stock of the "civilized" world
Other nations look at us and shake their heads at how ridiculous we have become. This not only affects us in areas related to the economy and finance but nations are increasingly seeing us as unreliable in areas such as foreign policy, etc.

2. Markets are immune
I think markets have come to expect this childish behavior from the GOP and have long since factored this into their calculations. I seriously doubt the Teabaggers will ever actually allow us to default. They just like trying to exact a few more drops of blood out of the poor, our seniors and our veterans.

3. Our democracy has ceased to function
The anointing of GWB and Darth Cheney in 2000 was the start of the slow, steady destruction of our democracy. That was followed by 9-11 (whether masterminded by GWB/DC or simply allowed to happen to promote the PNAC agenda is not important) which gave "them" excuses to start a seemingly endless war in Afghanistan (I was all for taking out AQ and their friends in the Taliban) and then the war of choice in Iraq.

We saw significant voting irregularities in 2004. By some miracle the Democrats were able to wrestle control of the House back in 2006 - probably because most people saw the ineptness of the GOP following Katrina, Abu Ghraib, etc.

2008 surprised many pukes because not only had they lost the WH but controlled none of the branches of government except their plants on the Supreme Court. They were outraged that a ***ger could actually be elected President. They set up on that very day to challenge, obstruct anything this President wanted to do and to slowly destroy our democracy.

In the Senate we saw the perpetual filibuster. We saw the GOP in both Houses vote in lock-step against anything the President proposed.

In the meantime the GOP continued their advances in state houses and governors' mansions around the nation. With the 2010 election the tea baggers full of vitriol of having a black man in the "white" house took control of the House. The gerrymandered districts almost enshrined GOP domination.

Then came the push to disenfranchise the young (students), elderly and the poor. At the same time came a big push for immigration policy to be enforced by state and local agencies rather than the federal government. Then the attack on women's vaginas.

Our Democracy 1.01, two-party, winner-take-all system was destined to produce something like this, eventually. If there's ever a chance for a real Constitutional Convention, not dominated by the right and corporations, we need to revisit this whole system. Maybe, just maybe, there could be a chance in the mid to late 21st Century.

Sadly this is true. The dumb ass media keeps pushing the crap that "enacting a "Budget" is the same as "enacting Appropriations", thus eliminating a chance for shutdown. That's bullshit. Congress MUST do "part 2" and enact the appropriations too (signed by the President) for all agencies before the threat of a shutdown on January 15th goes completely away (at least until the debt ceiling mess comes up again).

The predictable impasse over that demand and the eventual Republican capitulation damaged the standing of Republicans as well as Congress.

“The shutdown was the first time a group largely drove the Republican Party in the Senate towards something that was disadvantageous,” said one top Republican Senate official.
