Bobby Thompson: $100M Navy charity scammer to be sentenced in Ohio

CLEVELAND -- A determined fundraiser who rubbed elbows with powerful politicians while masterminding a $100 million, cross-country Navy veterans charity fraud could face the rest of his life in prison.
The defendant, who identifies himself as 67-year-old Bobby Thompson but who authorities say is Harvard-trained attorney John Donald Cody, was scheduled to be sentenced Monday.
The Ohio attorney general's office, which handled his trial, asked the judge in a filing last week to sentence him to 41 years in prison. In addition, the prosecution recommended a $6.3 million fine.

Only a fraction of the $100 million was found. When he was arrested, authorities found fake IDs and a suitcase with $980,000 in cash.

After a six-week jury trial, Bobby Thompson was convicted {on November 14} in Cleveland on 23 charges of fraud, money laundering and identity theft.
Two newspapers have been on top of this: the Roanoke Times, and the Tampa Bay Times.
The article goes on to say:
Records show the defendant had showered politicians, often Republicans, with political donations.
Politicians who received donations from him, according to campaign finance filings, include George W. Bush and former presidential contenders Mitt Romney, John McCain and Rudolph Giuliani.
Maybe so, but "Thompson" worked with members of both major political parties in the furtherance of his scam.

His putative name was Bobby Thompson, and no kidding, with those 2009 contributions Thompson bought himself a 2010 law enacted by the Virginia General Assembly. It allowed him to continue scamming Virginians. Today, “Bobby Thompson” goes on trial on fraud charges in Cleveland, Ohio. His real name is John Donald Cody. He’s a UVa and Harvard Law graduate with a background in military intelligence, and he faces up to 30 years in prison. Last week it was announced that the many and varied campaign contributions Cody made as “Bobby Thompson” would play no role in the upcoming trial. Let’s look back on events regarding those.
