Man in custody after brief standoff outside U.S. courthouse

Authorities took an man into custody after a brief standoff in which he held a pellet gun to his own head outside the federal courthouse in downtown Baltimore, authorities said.

Police closed major intersections around the courthouse, including Light Street at both West Pratt and West Lombard streets. Employees were evacuated as a precaution. The man has not been identified.

Authorities continued to investigate the scene into the afternoon. A parcel that the man had with him was "cleared for any potential explosives," officials said.

The U.S. Marshals Service said the man arrived at the courthouse at around 10:15 a.m., sat on a bench outside the facility and held a gun to his own head. He asked to speak with the FBI, the marshals said.
