Central Texas deputy fatally shot serving warrant
By NOMAAN MERCHANT, Associated Press | December 19, 2013 | Updated: December 19, 2013 2:50pm

DALLAS (AP) — A sheriff's deputy was killed Thursday after gunfire erupted while he was serving a warrant at a home in Central Texas, authorities said.

Sgt. Adam Sowders was part of a team of officers entering a rural residence east of the town of Somerville to serve a warrant, Burleson County Sheriff Dale Stroud said. He was shot as the team entered just before 6 a.m. and later died of his injuries. No other officers were injured.

One suspect was in custody, Stroud said at a Thursday afternoon press conference. The sheriff did not identify the suspect.

The warrant was served at a rural residence east of the town of Somerville, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, according to Trooper Jimmy Morgan of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

I can not for the life of me understand why so many cops want everyone to be armed in this country. I don't know if this particular cop felt that way but many if not most do, and yet they are the ones that usually feel the effects the most...

Interesting. All the cops I have known (admittedly only a few - 5 or 6) would be very happy if there were a lot fewer guns out there. Maybe it depends on where you live?

And vocal about it too. But that is anecdotal from the ones I worked with at my previous job. I would be interested in seeing a poll.

They can be dangerous for innocent civilians and cops too. I'd like to see the rest of the details.

things have changed. If there is a warrant out for your arrest, you must be a terrorist.

The articles hint that this was a "no-knock" style raid, which I consider a violation of the 4th amendment.

Residents, cops, and people who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I will never understand serving warrants in the pre-dawn hours with military siege tactics employed, and folks then wonder why cops get shot at or worse, killed.

This type of 'no-kock' warrant is dangerous for everyone involved, including pets and neighbors.

Police cheifs across the country desperatley need to re-think this strategy.
