Move over 415, San Francisco gets new area code
Source: SF Chronicle
(12-19) 14:17 PST San Francisco -- Starting in 13 months, new phone numbers issued in San Francisco or Marin County will no longer begin with the familiar "415."
Instead, get ready for "628."
California regulators on Thursday approved a new area code overlay for San Francisco and Marin counties. Existing numbers won't change. But come February 2015, any new number will start with the area code 628.
The reason? After 66 years of service, 415 is almost used up.

San Francisco joins San Jose, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and Denver as cities with multiple area codes.

(13,583 posts)Everyone will have to dial all ten digits now. The "split" method would have been much better because those in the same area code would still be able to dial the usual 7 digits. Oh well.

(288 posts)I most often just tap a name, or tell my phone to connect to someone.
"Ok Google, Call the wife, or call the girlfriend or conference with them both"
Modern marvels these handsets.

(4,219 posts)Most new numbers I call I add to my contacts first so... The occasional 800 number to some CS credit card or cable or something. But even those, I do less and less.
Obviously my situation is shaped by living in a cell phone only household.
I guess to dial means now "to tap on glass"...

(7,820 posts)We went to 10 digit dialing/overlay last year. I found it surprisingly easy to get used to (and I have a job where I do a lot of work on the phone)
