UGANDA PASSES TOUGH NEW LAW AGAINST HOMOSEXUALITY

By RODNEY MUHUMUZA

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan lawmakers on Friday passed an anti-gay law that punishes "aggravated homosexuality" with life imprisonment.

The bill drew wide condemnation when it was first introduced in 2010 and included the death penalty, but that was removed from the revised version passed by parliament.

Although a provision for the death penalty was removed from the original bill, the law passed Friday sets life imprisonment as the maximum penalty for the new offense of "aggravated homosexuality," according to the office of a spokeswoman for Uganda's parliament.

The bill was introduced to parliament by a lawmaker who argued the law was needed to deter Western homosexuals he accused of "recruiting" Ugandan children.

(1) If someone is recruiting Ugandan children that is called pedophilia and is more likely to be perpetrated by heterosexual men on girls than by heterosexual women on boys, homosexual women on girls or homosexual men on boys
(2) I doubt Ugandan children are the most "desirable" targets by would-be homosexual pedophiles. First of all it is difficult to get to the country and I can imagine there are all kinds of issues getting into and out of the country let alone committing acts there

I also like the term "aggravated" homosexuality. What are they so aggravated about? That you passed this inane law that will further isolate you from the strongest economy on the continent, i.e. South Africa, or the rest of the civilized world?

If they think the West's negative reaction to Russia's law, not against homosexuality or homosexual acts but solely of "promoting homosexual behavior or a homosexual "lifestyle" (whatever that is) is overdone, wait until they see the smoke clear from this act of stupidity.

Because they are changing as fast as they can! I loathe those who defend hate mongers, and I don't care if they know it. They are part of the problem.

Not in freedom of the press, not in plurality, not in social justice or any justice at all.

Many of these countries have different priorities and gays should just stay away from them.

Just as drug users should stay away from Singapore and Malaysia, I think.

And hikers should stay away from the mountains surrounding Iran, and visitors should stay away from any proximity to N. Korea.

Frankly I think we should fully sanction countries such as Uganda for oppressing people of any stripe, my only gripe is that we are inconsistent in practice.

Also, I find your comparison of an inborn trait to drug users, or part time visitors(or possible visitors) to other countries to be downright offensive.
