China vents anger over Dalai Lama's planned Norway visit

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - China's Foreign Ministry expressed anger on Friday at plans by the Dalai Lama to visit Norway, a country with which China already has strained ties following the awarding of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to prominent Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

"China resolutely opposes any country receiving the Dalai Lama. China resolutely opposes any form of official meetings with the Dalai Lama by government officials of other countries," ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing.

"We hope that the related parties will effectively respect China's core concerns, take practical efforts and make effective actions to improve relations," she added, in response to a question about the Dalai Lama's Norway trip.

Geir Lundestad, the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told Reuters that the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader would be coming to Norway in May, but that he was coming at the invitation of local Buddhist groups, not the Nobel Committee. Still, Lundestad said they have expressed a wish to meet with him.

Oh well then I suspect Norway do something right when PRC is going on its nuts and is angry about the visit of Dalai Lama.... And for the thing with PRC who have strained ties with - it is all about posturing on the part of the PRC nothing more... They just do not understand that the Organization who give out the Nobel Peace prize is independent of the Norwegian government - even though some politicians who are not active in the parliament (Stortinget) is on the board - to decide who is given the Nobel Prize they have no official links to the Parliament ... Even when our Ambassador to PRC tried to explain to the officials in Beijing, what the case was - they put their deaf ear to it - and have not been to keen on understanding how things are in Norway.. In fact they have for the last couple of years been acting as a bully on the stage when it comes to PRC... And the free trade agreement who was more or less in the go position before 2010 is dead in the water... But then again I guess we could be able to sell our goods elsewhere in Asia - even as PRC is the biggest country in the area by far - many others can also be traded with if need arise...

PRC is in many cases acting up the last coupe of years - I suspect a lot of the posturing is about being seen as a power on the world stage - and of a more traditional Chinese posturing for the world - after all - the idea of China to be the center of the world are not dead yet in China - in fact that idea is very well alive. Even as they might know that PRC are not the center of the world - they could act on it - and then made it possible - if necessary by hard power.. The military build up they have been doing for the last 10 years - and how they treat their nabours is not exactly promising for a peacefully future in Asia... At least not around South China Sea/Japan... Who by the way PRC have a bone to pick with as it is...

PRC is reasserting itself - and want rather desperately to be seen as a power on the world stage - at least at par with the US - and they are bulling a lot of new hardware to make the goal possible - even put an aircraft carrier (Ex Soviet-Ukrainian) in the sea ot make trials about how it works...

Indeed - they might have a shot at greatness if they was able, or willing to do something to clean up their own act before they want to put fingers on others..
