Federal appeals court upholds temporary block on [Wisconsin] state abortion law

Madison — A federal appeals court in Chicago left in place Friday a temporary block on a state law requiring doctors in abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an August ruling by federal District Court Judge William Conley in Madison that blocked the admitting privileges portion of the Wisconsin law.

Such laws here and other states such as Texas have provoked bitter debate between opponents who see them as an attack on women's access to abortion and supporters who see them as protection for women's health.

The three-judge panel on the appellate court was unanimous in upholding the temporary injunction, but one of the judges wrote separately to say he believed Wisconsin lawmakers and GOP Gov. Scott Walker had a rational basis for passing the abortion restrictions.
