OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A California judge has ordered a hospital to keep a 13-year-old girl declared brain dead on a ventilator for another week.

The order by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo on Monday calls for Children's Hospital in Oakland to continue providing treatment and support to Jahi McMath until Dec. 30 or further order from the court.

Doctors at Children's Hospital in Oakland, where Jahi is on life support, have concluded she is brain dead. But Jahi's family disputes that.

the body has healing powers that no doctor can assess accurately.

All they can proclaim are probabilities.

How many times do you read that someone's been in a coma
for 6 months, sometimes years, and they wake up!

May the Force be with her.

She's not in a coma. She's dead. People don't recover from being braindead.

When EEG shows brain death and evoked responses are non-existent, there is no possible way for the patient to make a come back.

However, as a humanitarian gesture and considering the holidays, it is probably a right decision by the judge so that the family doesn't have to relive this every Christmas for years to come.

Pretending she isn't dead is grotesque, spending hospital ICU rates to do so is idiotic.

It's sad the girl died (virtually) but these Jesus-infections on every aspect of life is soooo detrimental.

A family here (south Texas) was so in denial, they publicly prayed for their 28 year old daughter's resurrection after her fatal car accident in Africa. They fully believed it was possible she'd be raised from the dead.

I don't know who finally got them to see reason, but they buried her, probably less than 10 days after her death. Honestly, I was concerned the county health department or the mortuary was going to intervene to get her buried.

I think it's good the judge won't let the hospital just pull the plug. Let the family get second opinions and do some testing on brain blood flow. The 'complications' were after surgery bleedout, to the point her heart stopped. How long before the hospital noticed and restarted her heart? To the point there was brain death or not? Sounds like the hospital wants to pull the plug to make it impossible to do further testing. If they had noticed sooner the child was bleeding out perhaps it wouldn't have gotten to the point of cardiac arrest.

The pathologist wanted the plug pulled right away, to help him more accurately determine the cause of death. Leaving her on life support will allow her body some healing and will obliterate some of the evidence.

It appears that this little girl really is brain dead, but I applaud the judge for allowing the family another week to come to terms with this. How generous of him/her to do so. She is their precious 13-yr old 'baby', not some "zombie" as someone else called her. Disgusting, by the way.
