Boston-area pharmacy to settle $100 M for meningitis victims

Source: UPI

BOSTON, Maine, (UPI) -- The bankrupt Boston-area pharmacy that allegedly made tainted steroid injections which sickened hundreds and killed 64 will compensate victims, officials say.

Paul D. Moore, the bankruptcy trustee involved in the negotiations with the bankrupt New England Compounding in Framingham, Mass., told the Boston Globe: "We are working very hard to expedite this process and get money to victims as quickly as possible. This is a first step, although a significant one."

The proposed $100 million settlement, which must be finalized and approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, provides hope to the 751 people who developed meningitis or other infections from the injections including those who died, The Globe said.

It's estimated some 14,000 patients nationwide received the tainted steroid injections and in addition to meningitis, many developed other symptoms. It's unclear how much victims or their families would each receive because the victims have until Jan. 15 to file claims with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

It was really criminal what this pharmacy did. They ignored good manufacturing practices for a compounding pharmacy and was actually manufacturing large lots of product without proper sterile procedures - which included many environmental issues and out and out dirty conditions.

Sixty-four (64) people died as a result. Countless others took sick and some are still at risk for developing conditions that could still kill them.

Someone should go to jail for this. They should be made an example of - so that no one else in this business tries to skirt the rules and regulations.

Getting off with just a financial penalty is really dodging a bullet here. Even though it is a substantial sum of money - $100 million can't bring those people back that they killed.
