Texas bar bans gay men over ‘safety risk’ for dancing to country music instead of hip-hop
By David Edwards
Thursday, December 26, 2013 11:49 EST

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is backing two Texas men who say that they were recently kicked out of a South Texas night club for dancing to country music instead of hip-hop or rap.

Justin Meyer, 21, explained to the Victoria Advocate that management at Cactus Canyon told them on Saturday night that there was a policy against men dancing together to country music.

However, Meyer said that he later discover that the club had no such policy.

“I don’t like that we were lied to,” he remarked. “The confrontation never would have happened if they hadn’t lied about the policy.”

Meyer’s boyfriend, 30-year-old James Douglas, said that the couple was finishing a dance to the song “Cowboys and Angels” on Saturday night when they were told that they were violating club policy and posed a safety risk.

Every time someone puts on country music, some guy's wife runs off with his pickup truck and his dog, leaving him to drink alone all the time and wish she'd come back.

“We’ve never kicked anyone out of the club for dancing,” Dillender noted. “Our obligation to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is to maintain the peace.”

Dillender claimed that one of the men poked the manager in the chest and demanded to see the club policy during a parking lot confrontation. The men were told that the police would be called if they tried to return to the bar. Meyers maintained that the manager was never poked.

By the manager's own admission, there was a discussion of some policy at the time of the incident.

Yes, the news report makes it obvious that there WAS a discussion of bar policy and then offers two conflicting versions of the bar "policy."

The news report has a direct quote from the bar management:

"It is acceptable for women to dance... but it's not acceptable for men to dance together in this type of business we run."

And later in the story they report that bar management claims they have no policy.

One of the two scenarios from the bar spokesfolk is incorrect.

Technically it isn't even dancing. It's just a drunken roller skate rink without the skates. I never met anyone in Texas who could dance, but apparently these two gentlemen could, which is probably the real reason they got kicked out. And what about the mechanical bull that's in every damn bar in Texas? Isn't that a safety hazard?

I hope they sue the hell out of that bar and make a fine penny (what's left after the lawyers take their share).

I rode a mechanical bull in a country bar in Houston. That was the first and last time I went to a country bar in Texas, but I was by no means going to leave without at least trying the mechanical bull. I managed to stay on, too.

Since teh gays know 'em all.

I grew up 90 miles away from Victoria and had family members that lived there. The managers were concerned about the safety risk--there concerns are of a possible boycott of the straight clientele and of homophobia in general.

I checked his Facebook page and it looks like he gets sewn into his blue jeans like most C&W performers. Seriously, those things are so tight that you know when he gets a pimple on his butt.

BTW, thanks for posting the video. It is a great reminder as to why I haven't listened to C&W for years.
