Dead Utah eagles killed by West Nile virus
Source: Salt Lake Tribune
They may be the symbol of our nation, but bald eagles are scavengers.
It is that characteristic specifically of finding carrion on the water that has led to the death of at least 27 bald eagles and impacted many more across northern Utah.
State wildlife officials announced Tuesday that the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis., confirmed West Nile virus is the cause of the eagle deaths. Five more eagles are currently being treated in wildlife rehabilitation centers.
West Nile virus was suspected when sick and dead eagles started to show up in early December, but wildlife officials were reluctant to identify the mosquito-borne virus as the culprit because it has never been reported so late in the year.

(29,257 posts)I just read in GD that it was Fukushima radiation that did it. And oh yes, there are plenty of people that seem to agree.
It is merely the flip side of Americans that don't believe in evolution.
I would be shocked but I already knew that the combination of bad public education, religious/magical thinking and media paranoia has left many Americans as dumb as doorknobs.

(13,685 posts)Can you imagine the panic that would set in if any government agency ever said anything dies from radiation?
They sure as hell know better.
So.... SLC must have some bad ass mosquitoes. Here it is winter time and they've been infecting Eagles!
And sure glad it wasn't air pollution of some kind. Been hearing about the bad air around SLC. Had they layed the Eagle deaths on bad air, why that would be awful for industry and scare people. Can't be scaring the sheeple now.

Radiation? Seals, Sea Lions, Polar Bears, Bald Eagles, Sea Stars, Turtles, King & Sockeye Salmon, Herring, Anchovies and Sardines In The Western Part of North America All Suffering Mysterious Diseases At the Same Time

Is Fukushima Decimating Wildlife in the Western Portion of North America?
Weve previous documented that seals, sea lions, polar bears, sea stars, turtles, sockeye salmon, herring, anchovies and sardines on the West Coast of North America are all suffering mysterious diseases
which are killing many.
EneNews.com reports:
Seattle Times, Dec. 29, 2013: Bald eagles are dying in Utah 20 in the past few weeks alone and nobody can figure out why. Many suffered from seizures, head tremors and paralysis Many of the eagles were brought to the mammoth Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah Within 48 hours, most were dead. State wildlife specialists are baffled. For weeks, officials have sent birds for necropsies. At first, the agencys disease scientists guessed the illness could be encephalitis, which is caused by the West Nile virus, but later ruled out that possibility. Officials suggest the die-off is possibly connected to the deaths of thousands of eared grebes that began in Utah in November. Officials still dont know why the shore birds became sick. Officials at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center have their own theories. Some point to radiation from Japan after the 2011 meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. A call from Idaho shed new light: A wildlife official said bald eagles there were also getting sick, suggesting the birds were arriving in Utah already in bad health.
Buz Marthaler, Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah co-founder: Its just hard to have your national bird in your arms, going through seizures in a way it cant control when you can see its pain but dont know whats happening to it. As a human being, you just have problems with that. And when you lose one, it just grabs your heart. In an average year, we might get one or two, but weve received nine so far, and five of those have died. The other four are still in our care. We arent ruling out anything.

In a second article, EneNews.com notes:
Juneau Empire, Dec. 29, 2013: the king salmon has fallen from its throne. Alaska has seen unprecedented declines in recent years scientists like Joe Orsi and Jim Murphy, both fisheries research biologists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, are digging deeper into the cause of the startling downward trend. When asked about the potential impact Fukushima may be having on king salmon stocks in the Gulf of Alaska and elsewhere in the state, Orsi would not comment. Ive been told to refer you to the (Environmental Protection Agency), he said, Because Im not an expert on the topic. Calls and emails to the EPA were not returned in time and digging on the federal agencys site revealed no current information on radiation from the Fukushima disaster. The last posted monitoring results occurred in June of 2011.
Unfortunately, the American and Japanese governments are doing everything they can to cover up the severity of the Fukushima disaster. Indeed, anytime government or big corporations screw up, the government works to cover it up
instead of actually fixing the problem.

Enenews.com grabs links, much like this LBN forum, only Enennews.com is focused on stories about nuclear. 9 times out of ten the links come from established media.
Then discussions by the people take place much the same as DU.
Enenews.com is a wonderful fountain of information.

(10,575 posts)2012 was deadliest year for West Nile in US, CDC says
West Nile virus killed 286 people in the United States last year, making it the deadliest year yet for the virus, the federal government reported on Monday.
Texas was especially hard hit by the virus, which is carried by mosquitoes and which only arrived in the United States in 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.
A total of 5,674 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 286 deaths, were reported to CDC from 48 states (excluding Alaska and Hawaii), the CDC said in a statement.
...
The virus has a life cycle that takes it from mosquitoes to birds and back into mosquitoes that bite people. Its severity varies from year to year. In some years, only a few cases are reported, and in others, like 2012, it infects many people.
