Florida Station Replaces Rush Limbaugh & Pals With 'Hot' Country - Ouch It Burns Says The GOP
Source: DAILY KOS
You know how you sometimes get an unexpected gift a week or so after Christmas? Here you go. Rush Limbaugh is being booted off yet another radio station. It's a grand ole victory for the ever-growing BoycottRush/StopRush/FlushRush brigade. Oh heck, it's a good thing for the whole country. Some folks on the right just don't know it yet.
On December 26, 2013, Rush Limbaugh was put out to pasture by WPHR-FM, a Florida radio station serving the Vero Beach/Fort Pierce market. Seems the station tried on conservative talk radio for two and a half years; apparently it was not a good fit. So they asked the people, the people spoke, and guess what - unlike the failing Clear Channel this station listened :
Welcome to the Treasure Coasts brand new HOT COUNTRY station, 94.7 Hot Country!
Weve been conducting surveys and music tests gathering information on your likes and dislikes regarding country music along the Treasure Coast.
The response was overwhelming and we learned a lot. Heres what you told us:
You wanted less talk and more country music in the morning
And it gets better. Not only is Rush Limbaugh getting dumped - he's taking Hannity, Beck, Lewis, and Levin with him on this one. Happy New Year!

(55 posts)But didn't several progressives lose their radio stations as well? Could what is happening be a sign o' the times? I am dead curious because I think radio is dying, but am prepared to be flamed.

(9,090 posts)message that depends on as little truth interfering with their lies and alternate reality as possible.
they depend on americans (including many liberals) thinking that 95% of americans that listen to talk radio prefer the wit and wisdom of the limbaughs and hannity- ignorant unfunny idiots who have been wrong about everything.
n an even playing field the rhodes and shultzes and millers and hartmanns can beat the RW nut jobs yet in many of the bluest areas of the US there are overlapping RW signals and NO progressives. the great think tank megaphone that is RW radio and has been kicking liberal ass for 25 years while liberals ignored it, sells war, deregulation, tax breaks for billionaires, and global warming denial.
that's why they slap LW radio off the air except as symbols to fools that the reason there are no free alts for political talk radio in most parts of the country while driving and working is that americans prefer RW liars and anti-science chickenhawk warmongers and racists and misogynists and teacher and public ed and union and worker haters is because that's what americans want.
talk radio is dying because they have turned it into the most successful anti-democratic propaganda tool for the 1% that the world has ever known and while it was a profitable enabling excuse-filled bandwagon for the corporatists and republicans and fascists and racists and MSM to ride, it is driving them off a cliff. unfortunately, because the left still largely ignores it, it's taking all of us along with it.

(904 posts)...that in many markets, Hartmann and Rhodes were beating Limbaugh and Hannity, sometimes handily.
I firmly believe that there was a concerted, coordinated effort to financially starve Progressive Talk. I recall a memo written several years ago, listing several corporate sponsors and stating a desire to boycott Air America Radio.
I agree with you - the decline of Progressive Talk has absolute squat to do with the market. There was certainly a demand - so the PTB needed to choke off the supply.

(904 posts)...because what is happening is part of the changing radio landscape. In general, talk radio is on a downward slope nationwide (thanks to oversized turds like Limbaugh), and yes, progressive radio is getting hit hard as well (in part because of a lack of corporate sponsorship, and what I believe to be a conspiracy by Corporate America to starve progressive radio to its death).
Radio, in general, is losing relevance as a delivery platform, and is becoming less and less profitable.
But there's the internet, especially SiriusXM and IHeartRadio (among other outlets). Hartmann, Rhodes, Miller, and others, either have already, or intend to move, their shows to these outlets.

(3,489 posts)producing a local show is probably a good way to look at this. Large scale syndication, in general, probably reduces the workforce.

At least the country station probably won't be as overtly reactionary as the pig Limbaugh.

(1,015 posts)And speaking of victories, the battle against Rush Limbaugh and hate radio has caused over 2800 sponsors to pull ads from his show. This has to do with hundreds of thousands of people around the country protesting, making contact with sponsors, petitioning and boycotting. These everyday people, volunteers and activists in BoycottRush, FlushRush, and StopRush.net groups are changing the mark of radio. Many thanks to all those who are participating. Here are simple ways to help/support/join:
Join/Visit: BoycottRushFacebook Group
Sign:Limbaugh Sponsor & Clear Channel Petition
Visit: The StopRush Database (extensive list of sponsors)
There are many great groups that help support the boycotts/protests. Some of them include: Media Matters, UniteWomen.org, One Million Pissed-Off Women, Daily Kos, Being Liberal, Addicting Info,NOW, Political Loudmouth, and Liberals Unite.

(37,748 posts)"...after spending a year dismissing the massive advertiser losses as a couple of french fries that weren't hurting anyone at all, Limbaugh acknowledged that he was having a problem. But instead of accepting any responsibility, he lashed out and blamed his woes on a conspiracy perpetuated by "liberal feminists" in the media buying industry.

Looked up Radio-Locator.com for Vero Beach. This area is in receiving range of the Rush affiliates in Orlando (50 kW WFLF 540) and Miami (5 kW WIOD 610) and Melbourne (1 kW WMMB 1240) and Port St. Lucie (5 kW WPSL 1590).

(13,840 posts)Both Rush and Country Music serve the same purpose-to dumb down the listeners.

(8,962 posts)As much as I detest what passes for contemporary country music (I love the old pre-70's stuff however), I can't begin to equate it with hatemongering spewed out by Limbaugh and his ilk. Of course there are country performers who go out and spread their message of hate -- Hank Williams Jr. for example -- but some rockers such as Ted Nugent do the same. Bad music as a matter of one's personal taste and bad politics are both things to avoid, but on a larger scale a direct relationship between the two cannot be established.

(65 posts)while losing an FM station he's still on about 15 AM stations in the same coverage area. My Mother in law is in that area and she can tell me 8 AM's from memory that carry Limbaugh...she has on block.
Talk is not a big seller on FM in any market.
